Dublin

Climate Characteristics of Dublin

General Overview

Dublin features a maritime temperate climate. Thanks to its location on the east coast, which is somewhat protected by mountains, Dublin is one of the driest regions in Ireland. The city's weather is famous for its volatility—often described as "four seasons in one day"—yet temperatures remain mild throughout most of the year without significant extremes of heat or cold.

Summer Season and Warm Months

Summer in Dublin is pleasant and relatively cool compared to mainland Europe. Average daytime temperatures range between 18°C and 20°C (64-68°F). This period offers the most daylight hours, allowing visitors to enjoy the city's parks and beaches until late. Although it is the "warm" season, light rain showers are very common even in July and August.

Winter Season and Precipitation

Winter in Dublin is cool, grey, and wet, but rarely freezing. Daytime temperatures average around 8°C (46°F), while nighttime lows drop to 2°C or 3°C (36-37°F) on average. Snow is not very common in the city and tends to melt quickly, but strong winds from the Irish Sea can increase the wind chill factor.

Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena

Spring and autumn are beautiful but unpredictable seasons. Spring (March-May) is often the driest time of the year, while autumn brings stronger winds and rapid changes in cloud cover. Rainbows are a very frequent phenomenon in Dublin due to the swift transition between sunshine and rain.
