El Calafate
Climate Characteristics of El Calafate
General Overview
El Calafate features a cold semi-arid climate. Located in the "rain shadow" of the Andes, the city is very dry, but it is influenced by strong, cold westerly winds from the Pacific and nearby glaciers. The climate is challenging, with sudden and extreme weather changes.
Summer and Warm Months (December to February)
Summer is the busiest season and the best time to visit the glaciers. Daytime temperatures range between 15°C and 19°C (59-66°F), but the sun is very strong due to clean air. Key phenomenon: Very strong winds blow almost daily in summer, significantly lowering the perceived temperature. Nights remain cool (around 7°C / 45°F).
Winter Season (June to August)
Winter in El Calafate is cold, dry, and quiet. Daytime temperatures range from 3°C to 5°C (37-41°F), while nighttime lows regularly drop below 0°C (32°F). Nearby Lake Argentino can partially freeze, and snow is common, though in smaller amounts than in the mountains. Daylight hours are very short.
Transition Seasons (March-May and September-November)
Autumn (March-May) is a beautiful time when winds calm down and fall colors turn the scrubland orange and red. Spring (September-November) features gradual warming but the return of very strong winds.
