Jelgava

Climate Characteristics of Jelgava

General Overview

Jelgava is located about 40 km south of Riga, in the heart of the central Zemgale plain. Unlike coastal cities, Jelgava is situated in a flat, low-lying area, removed from the direct moderating influence of the Baltic Sea. Its climate is temperate continental, characterized by relatively warm summers and cold winters. Due to its position on the plains, the city is often exposed to winds, yet it is considered one of the warmest and most fertile regions in Latvia during the summer.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

In summer, daytime temperatures average between 22°C and 24°C (72-75°F), and on sunny days, they can climb above 28°C (82°F). In winter, the average daytime temperature is around -2°C (28°F), dropping to -10°C (14°F) or lower on cold nights. Due to the flat terrain, there are no significant "heat traps" or cold pockets, and temperatures remain relatively stable throughout the day compared to mountainous regions.

Precipitation Seasons (June-August)

Summer is the wettest period in Jelgava. Rain often appears as intense thunderstorms developing over the wide agricultural plains. In winter, snow is very common, covering the palace park and the banks of the Lielupe River, giving the city a classic European winter look.

Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May and September)

Late spring (May) is a wonderful time to visit Jelgava; the green parks and the river provide a great backdrop for walks. September offers relatively stable weather, with crisp days and clear skies, perfect for visiting the city's historical sites before the cold rains of October begin.
