Climate Characteristics of Juárez

General Overview

Juárez features an arid desert climate. Due to its location in the Chihuahuan Desert at an altitude of approximately 1,100 meters (3,600 feet), it experiences extreme weather with significant variations between seasons and between day and night. It is one of the few places in Mexico where one can experience a true cold winter alongside a scorching summer.

Summer and Warm Months (May to September)

Summer in Juárez is hot and very dry. Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 35°C (95°F) and during the peak season (June-July), they often climb above 40°C (104°F). Despite the aridity, short and intense "monsoon" rains occasionally occur in late afternoon during July and August, providing brief relief but increasing humidity.

Winter Season (December to February)

Winter in Juárez is significantly colder than in most of Mexico. While days can be pleasant and sunny (around 15°C/59°F), nighttime temperatures frequently drop below freezing (0°C/32°F). Cold fronts from the north can bring freezing winds and occasional light snow events, making winter here quite challenging.

Transition Seasons

The transition seasons are relatively short but are considered the most pleasant times to visit. Spring is characterized by strong winds and occasional dust storms, while autumn offers clear skies and very comfortable temperatures during both day and night.

The coldest month. Days average 14°C (57°F) but nights are freezing (around 0°C/32°F). Very cold fronts are possible.

February

Daytime starts to warm slightly (18°C/64°F). Nights remain very cold (3°C/37°F). Skies are mostly clear.

March

Start of spring. Temperatures of 22°C (72°F) daytime. Known for strong winds and occasional dust storms.

April

Very pleasant. Average 27°C (81°F) daytime and fresh nights (10°C/50°F). Very dry month with good visibility.

May

Hot and dry. Temperatures climb to 32°C (90°F) daytime. The sun is very strong and humidity is extremely low.

June

The hottest and driest month. Average 36°C (97°F) daytime (40°C/104°F days are common). Outdoor activity at noon is not recommended.

July

Hot with a chance of rain. 36°C (97°F) daytime. Start of short monsoon rains that bring some cloud cover.

August

Hot and more humid. 35°C (95°F) daytime. The wettest month of the year (relatively for a desert) due to afternoon storms.

September

Still hot but more pleasant. 31°C (88°F) daytime. Nights start to cool and skies clear up.

October

The most pleasant month to visit. 26°C (79°F) daytime and 11°C (52°F) at night. Very stable and comfortable weather.

November

Cool and clear. Temperatures drop to 19°C (66°F) daytime and nights become cold (5°C/41°F).

December

Wintry and cold. 14°C (57°F) daytime and nights near freezing (1°C/34°F). Chance of light snow events.
