Kaunas
Climate Characteristics of Kaunas
General Overview
Kaunas is located in central Lithuania, at the confluence of the two largest rivers, Nemunas and Neris. Due to its geographical position, it tends to be slightly warmer than Vilnius during the summer. The meeting of the rivers and the valley topography where the Old Town sits result in higher humidity and frequent morning mists. The climate is temperate-continental, with distinct seasons—from a lush, vibrant summer to a snowy, cold winter that freezes the riverbanks.
Temperatures and Daily Variations
In summer, daytime temperatures range from 23°C to 26°C (73-79°F), often crossing 30°C (86°F) during heatwaves. In winter, the average daytime temperature is around -2°C (28°F), dropping to -8°C (18°F) or lower at night. Due to its valley location, nighttime temperatures can be slightly higher than in surrounding open areas, but the humidity makes the cold feel more piercing.
Precipitation Seasons (June-August)
Summer is the wettest period, with strong thunderstorms and heavy summer rains being very common. The abundant water around the city contributes to rapid cloud development in the afternoons. In winter, snow is very common and stays on the ground for long periods, giving Kaunas Castle and the famous LaisvÄs alÄja a classic snowy European look.
Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May and September)
May is one of the most beautiful months in Kaunas, with blooming at its peak and humidity still low. September offers relatively stable weather with crisp days and clear skies. This is a great time for walks along the river promenades and in the city's parks before the autumn humidity sets in.
