Mitzpe ramon
Climate Characteristics of Mitzpe Ramon
General Overview
Mitzpe Ramon enjoys a continental-desert climate with significant mountainous influences. The combination of its location in the heart of the desert and its high topographical elevation (about 860 meters) creates a unique weather pattern in Israel: very dry, clear, and significantly colder than other southern regions, especially at night.
Summer Season and Warm Months
Summer in Mitzpe Ramon is considered one of the most comfortable in the country. Despite the strong desert sun, daytime temperatures range from 30°C to 32°C, and humidity is very low, preventing a sticky feeling. In the evenings, temperatures drop rapidly, and most summer nights feature a cool breeze that often requires long sleeves.
Winter Season and Precipitation
Winter in Mitzpe Ramon is among the coldest in Israel. Daytime temperatures range from 13°C to 15°C, but at night they frequently drop close to 0°C. Annual precipitation is very low (about 80 mm), but due to the extreme cold, every few years the town experiences a significant snow event that accumulates on the ground.
Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena
Transition seasons are characterized by extreme temperature shifts between day and night and phenomena such as sand and dust storms. Spring sometimes brings spectacular flash floods in local desert streams following heavy localized rains, while autumn features exceptionally clear skies and extraordinary visibility over the Crater.
Weather in Mitzpe Ramon by Month
January
January is the coldest month of the year. Daytime temperatures average about 13°C, and at night they drop to 6°C on average, with frost events (temperatures below zero) being common. Rain is scarce but when it arrives, it is accompanied by very cold winds, and rarely, snow.
February
The extreme cold continues through February. Temperatures are similar to January and the air is very dry and cold. This is the month when visibility from the cliff toward the Crater is at its peak due to the clean air. Winds blowing along the cliff can be particularly strong and freezing.
March
In March, a slight warming begins during the day (about 18°C), but nights remain very cold. This is a volatile month—spring heatwaves may occur alongside sudden rain showers that can cause flash floods in nearby streams.
April
The weather in April becomes very pleasant during the day, around 23°C. This is an excellent time for hiking in the Ramon Crater. Humidity is very low, and the sky is usually blue and clear. Nights are still cool and require warm clothing.
May
Temperatures climb to about 27°C and the atmosphere becomes summer-like and dry. Rain almost completely disappears. This is the month when the intensity of the desert sun begins to be felt at noon, but the dryness maintains relative comfort.
June

July
July is a sunny and completely dry month. Daytime temperatures hover around 31°C. The great advantage of Mitzpe Ramon is the nights—while the rest of the country suffers from humidity, here the temperature drops to about 20°C with clear desert air.
August
The warmest month of the year, yet still much more comfortable than the rest of the country. Daytime temperatures reach 32°C. This is a popular month for stargazing (the Perseids meteor shower) due to the clear skies and lack of light pollution or clouds.
September
In September, a relief from the heat is felt. Daytime temperatures drop to 30°C and nights become cooler. Humidity remains zero, and the air becomes particularly pleasant for outdoor activities in the afternoon.
October
Autumn arrives in Mitzpe Ramon with a drop to 26°C during the day. Nights become significantly cooler (about 15°C) and the sky begins to fill occasionally with high clouds. First local rains may occur at the end of the month.
