General Overview

Palomino is located in northern Colombia (La Guajira department) at the unique meeting point between the river and the Caribbean Sea. The climate here is humid tropical. Unlike nearby Santa Marta which is drier, Palomino is characterized by lush jungle vegetation and higher humidity, due to its immediate proximity to the rainy slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Due to high humidity, nights can feel warm, but a breeze from the sea or river often cools the air slightly. The sun is very strong here, but mountain clouds tend to appear more frequently than in neighboring cities.

These are the periods when the jungle surrounding Palomino is at its peak splendor. Rain typically appears as short, intense tropical showers, usually in the afternoon or at night. October is the wettest month, and during this time the river may rise and the current becomes stronger (less suitable for river tubing).

Dry Seasons (December-April and July-August)

These are the sunniest periods. The skies are clear and the sea is generally calmer (though the Caribbean in this area always has strong waves). January and February are the driest months and are considered the ideal time for staying in eco-huts on the shoreline.
