Salento

Climate Characteristics of Salento

General Overview

Salento is located in the Quindío department at an altitude of approximately 1,900 meters (6,230 feet). Due to its elevation and proximity to the high Andes, its climate is categorized as subtropical highland. Salento is known for being humid and cooler than Medellín, with the famous mist (Neblina) covering the Cocora Valley being its most iconic feature.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

Daytime temperatures consistently average between 18°C and 22°C (64-72°F), while nighttime lows drop to 10°C-12°C (50-54°F). The weather is highly unpredictable: the sun can feel very strong at noon, but as soon as it disappears or it begins to rain, temperatures drop quickly and it becomes quite cold.

Rainy Seasons (March-May and October-November)

Salento is a fairly rainy region year-round, but these periods are the peaks. The rain is essential for coffee crops and the vibrant green color of the Cocora Valley. During this season, the mist is thicker, and the valley trails can become very muddy.

Dry Seasons (December-February and June-August)

These are the best times for trekking and hiking. Days are sunnier, and visibility of the tall wax palms in the valley is at its best. However, even in the "dry season," local showers are possible due to the tropical mountain environment.
