Climate Characteristics of Salta

General Overview

Salta enjoys a subtropical highland climate. Due to its elevation, the weather is much milder and more temperate than the lower, hotter regions of northern Argentina. The city is characterized by a very long dry season (winter and spring) and a short, concentrated rainy season (summer).

Summer and Rainy Season (December to March)

Summer in Salta is warm and rainy. Daytime temperatures range between 26°C and 28°C (79-82°F), and humidity is relatively high. Most of the annual rainfall occurs during this period, usually as intense afternoon or evening thunderstorms, which turn the surrounding mountains a vivid green.

Winter and Dry Season (June to August)

Winter is the driest and clearest season, considered an excellent time to visit. Days are sunny and pleasant (around 19°C to 21°C / 66-70°F), but due to the high altitude and lack of cloud cover, nighttime temperatures drop significantly and can reach 3°C (37°F) or less. Snow is an extremely rare event in the city itself.

Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena

Spring (September-November) is the warmest and driest period of the year before the rains arrive, with temperatures sometimes climbing above 30°C (86°F). Autumn (April-May) offers stable and very comfortable weather for walking tours in the city and its desert surroundings.

Peak of the rainy season and warm. 27°C (81°F) daytime. Skies cloud over quickly in the afternoon; heavy rains are common.

February

Still very rainy and warm (26°C/79°F daytime). The landscape around the city is green and blooming.

March

End of the rainy season. Pleasant temperatures (25°C/77°F daytime), and rainfall decreases toward the end of the month.

April

One of the best months. Clear, dry, and very comfortable weather (23°C/73°F daytime).

May

Dry and cooler autumn (21°C/70°F daytime). Nights become significantly cooler (8°C/46°F).

June

Start of winter. Completely dry and sunny. 19°C (66°F) daytime and cold nights (4°C/39°F).

July

The driest month. 19°C (66°F) daytime and nights near freezing (3°C/37°F). Excellent mountain visibility.

August

Similar to July but starting to warm (21°C/70°F daytime). Dry winds may blow from the mountains.

September

Start of spring. Very dry and warm (24°C/75°F daytime). Vegetation awaits the first rains.

October

The hottest month (before the rains). 27°C (81°F) daytime (can reach 32°C/90°F). Clear blue skies.

November

Very warm (28°C/82°F daytime). Toward the end of the month, the first rain showers may appear.

December

Start of summer and rains. 28°C (82°F) daytime. Humidity rises, and thunderstorms become frequent.
