Climate Characteristics of Beit El

General Overview

Beit El enjoys a Mediterranean mountainous climate. Due to its high topographical elevation, it is considered one of the coldest settlements in the central region and the Jerusalem hills. The climate in the town is characterized by clear mountain air, relative dryness compared to the coastal plain, and cold, stormy winters.

Summer Season and Warm Months

The summer in Beit El is very pleasant and significantly more comfortable than the summer in the lowlands or the coast. Despite strong daytime radiation, temperatures rarely cross 30°C (86°F) and humidity is very low. In the evening, temperatures drop and the mountain breeze creates a cool atmosphere that often requires long sleeves even at the peak of August.

Winter Season and Precipitation

The winter in Beit El is among the coldest and wettest in the country. The settlement is exposed to strong westerly winds that bring significant amounts of precipitation (averaging about 600 mm). Due to the high altitude, snow falls in the settlement almost every winter, and sometimes it accumulates into a significant layer that disrupts daily life for several days.

Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena

The transition seasons are short and characterized by sudden weather changes. Spring brings unique mountain blossoms and green growth throughout the area, while autumn features excellent visibility and a rapid drop in temperatures, especially at night.

 

Weather in Beit El by Month

January

January is the coldest month of the year. Daytime temperatures range around 12°C (54°F), and at night they drop to an average of 6°C (43°F). It is a very rainy month with storms and strong winds, and the chance of snow is at its peak during this month.

February

Winter continues in full force with low temperatures and high precipitation. February is similar to January in terms of cold, and the mountain landscape around the settlement becomes green and blooming. Snow is also very common this month if a cold system arrives.

March

Spring begins to show its first signs with temperatures rising to about 16°C (61°F) during the day. Despite the warming, nights remain very cold and significant rain events can still occur.

April

Especially comfortable spring weather. Temperatures climb to 21°C (70°F) during the day and nights are pleasant (about 12°C/54°F). Humidity is low and visibility from the Benjamin hills toward the lowlands and coast is at its best.

May

Temperatures rise to about 25°C (77°F) and days become warm and clear. Rain almost completely disappears. The atmosphere becomes summer-like, but the mountain dryness maintains a very comfortable feeling in the shade.

June

Summer officially begins with temperatures of about 27°C (81°F) during the day. Skies are completely clear with no precipitation. The mountain breeze in the afternoon begins to appear, significantly relieving the heat.

July

A very hot and dry month during the day (about 29°C/84°F), but very comfortable at night. Nights in Beit El remain cool (about 18°C/64°F), allowing for comfortable sleep without air conditioning, unlike the sweaty coastal plain.

August

The warmest month of the year, yet still much more pleasant than the national average. Temperatures hover around 29°C-30°C (84-86°F) during the day. Heat stress is felt at noon under the sun, but in the shade and evenings, the air is very pleasant.

September

The start of autumn brings a slight temperature drop to 28°C (82°F). Nights become cooler and humidity remains very low. The air becomes particularly clear and high-quality.

October

Significant relief from the heat with temperatures of about 24°C (75°F) during the day. Nights become cool (about 15°C/59°F) and the first rains ("Yoreh") may occur toward the end of the month.

November

Temperatures drop to 18°C (64°F) during the day and the atmosphere becomes wintry. Rainfall increases significantly and winds strengthen. This is the transition month when truly warm clothes are worn again.

December

Winter officially returns. Temperatures drop to 13°C (55°F) during the day and 8°C (46°F) at night. Rainy days become frequent, and the sky is cloudy most of the time. The area around Beit El fills with mists and low clouds.
