Climate Characteristics of Buenos Aires

General Overview

Buenos Aires features a humid subtropical climate. The city experiences four distinct seasons, with hot, humid summers and relatively mild winters. As it is located in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed compared to Europe or the Middle East.

Summer and Warm Months (December to February)

Summer in Buenos Aires is hot and often characterized by high, sometimes oppressive humidity. Daytime temperatures range between 28°C and 30°C (82-86°F), though heatwaves can push them above 35°C (95°F). This is the busiest tourist season despite the humidity. Short, intense summer rainstorms (thunderstorms) are very common and help to briefly cool the air.

Winter Season (June to August)

Winter in Buenos Aires is mild and cool, but rarely freezing. Daytime temperatures average around 15°C (59°F), while nighttime lows drop to 7°C-9°C (45-48°F) on average. Grey, rainy days are more common during this season, but snow is an extremely rare event, occurring only once every few decades.

Transition Seasons (March-May and September-November)

Autumn and spring are considered the best times to visit the city. The weather is generally clear and very comfortable for walking (around 20°C to 22°C / 68-72°F). In October and November, the city is filled with the spectacular purple blooms of Jacaranda trees, making the avenues particularly beautiful.

January

Peak of summer. Very hot and humid. 30°C (86°F) daytime and 20°C (68°F) at night. Sudden thunderstorms possible.

February

Still hot and humid (29°C/84°F daytime). A popular month for carnivals and outdoor events.

March

Start of autumn. Weather becomes very pleasant (26°C/79°F daytime). Humidity begins to drop.

April

One of the best months to visit. Clear days and a comfortable temperature of 23°C (73°F) daytime.

May

Cooler autumn (19°C/66°F daytime). Fall foliage begins and the air is fresh and pleasant for tours.

June

Start of winter. Cool and grey (16°C/61°F daytime and 8°C/46°F at night). Light rain may fall more frequently.

July

The coldest month. 15°C (59°F) daytime and 7°C (45°F) at night. Winter clothing required but not extremely heavy.

August

Similar to July (17°C/63°F daytime). Winds may blow from the river, increasing the chill factor.

September

Start of spring. Gradual warming (19°C/66°F daytime). The city begins to bloom again.

October

A wonderful month. 22°C (72°F) daytime. Purple Jacaranda blooms begin to color the streets.

November

Warm and pleasant spring (25°C/77°F daytime). Ideal time before the heavy summer heat arrives.

December

Start of summer. Temperatures rise to 28°C (82°F). Vibrant city atmosphere leading up to the holidays.
