Climate Characteristics of Cancún

General Overview

Cancún enjoys a tropical climate characterized by warm temperatures year-round. Unlike central Mexican cities located at high altitudes, Cancún is at sea level, meaning it is very humid. The weather is clearly divided into a dry season (November to April) and a rainier, more humid season (May to October).

Summer and Rainy Season (May to October)

Summer in Cancún is hot, humid, and wet. Daytime temperatures range between 31°C and 33°C (88-91°F), and high humidity makes it feel much hotter. Rains during this season are tropical—very intense but usually brief. Important note: The official Caribbean hurricane season runs from June to November, with the peak usually in September and October.

Winter and Dry Season (November to April)

This is peak season in Cancún and the most popular time to visit. The weather is perfect: days are sunny and warm (around 28°C/82°F), humidity drops, and the sea breeze makes being outdoors a delight. Nights are very pleasant (around 20°C/68°F), requiring nothing more than a light shirt.

Sea Temperature

One of Cancún's greatest advantages is that the sea temperature remains warm and ideal for swimming year-round, ranging from 26°C (79°F) in winter to 29°C (84°F) in summer.

February

Very hot and sunny. Temperatures rise to 29°C (84°F). This is one of the driest months of the year.

April

A beautiful and clear month. Daytime temperatures of 30°C (86°F). Excellent time for diving due to high water clarity.

May

Start of heavy heat and humidity. Temperatures climb to 32°C (90°F). First rain showers may appear.

June

Hot, humid, and rainy. Daytime temperatures around 32°C (90°F). Start of the hurricane season (though major storms are rare in June).

July

Scorching and sunny between rains. Average of 33°C (91°F) daytime. Humidity is very high and the sea is very warm.

August

The hottest month. 33°C (91°F) daytime with a "real feel" over 38°C (100°F) due to humidity. Frequent afternoon tropical rains.

September

The wettest month and peak of the storm season. 32°C (90°F) daytime. High chance of daily intense rain showers.

October

Still very rainy and humid, but the weather begins to stabilize toward the end of the month. 31°C (88°F) daytime.

November

Transition to the dry season. Temperatures drop to a comfortable 29°C (84°F), humidity decreases, and skies clear.

December

A wonderful month for vacation. Warm days (28°C/82°F) and refreshing nights. A very popular time for holiday travel.
