Climate Characteristics of Cork

General Overview

Cork features a maritime temperate climate. Due to its location in southwest Ireland and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the city enjoys very mild temperatures year-round. However, this position also makes it one of the rainiest regions in the country, with frequent precipitation and prevailing southwesterly winds.

Summer Season and Warm Months

Summer in Cork is pleasant and very mild. Average daytime temperatures range between 18°C and 20°C (64-68°F). This is the best time to enjoy the promenades along the River Lee and nearby beaches, but it must be noted that summer rains are an integral part of the local climate, occurring frequently even on sunny days.

Winter Season and Precipitation

Winter in Cork is cool, humid, and very grey. Daytime temperatures average around 9°C (48°F), while nighttime lows drop to 3°C or 4°C (37-39°F) on average. Due to the ocean's moderating influence, frost and snow are rare events in the city, but rain is present almost daily, often accompanied by thick sea mists.

Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena

The transition seasons in Cork are marked by extreme instability. Spring (March-May) is typically the season where you can experience the most "changes within minutes," while autumn brings strong Atlantic winds and a significant increase in rainfall. Weather similar to January (about 9°C/48°F daytime). The city is very wet and rainproof winter clothing is required constantly.

March

Start of spring. Days lengthen and the temperature rises to about 11°C (52°F). This is a particularly volatile month with sudden rain showers.

April

Temperatures climb to about 13°C (55°F). The green vegetation around the city becomes more intense, but rain continues to fall frequently.

May

One of the most pleasant months with spectacular blooms and a daytime average of 16°C (61°F). Daylight hours lengthen significantly.

June

Summer begins with about 18°C (64°F) during the day. The weather is very comfortable for outdoor activities and the sun sets very late.

July

One of the warmest months (about 20°C/68°F daytime). Despite being peak summer, light rain showers are still common.

Autumn begins with temperatures of 17°C (63°F) during the day. The air is very pleasant but precipitation levels begin to rise.
