Climate Characteristics of Daugavpils

General Overview

Daugavpils is located far from the Baltic Sea, near the borders of Lithuania and Belarus. Due to its inland position, its climate is the most continental in Latvia. While coastal cities enjoy the sea's moderating effect, Daugavpils experiences warmer summers and significantly colder, snowier winters. This is where the country's lowest temperatures are typically recorded.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

In summer, daytime temperatures average between 23°C and 26°C (73-79°F), and on some days, they can exceed 30°C (86°F). In winter, the cold is dry and intense; the average daytime temperature is around -3°C (27°F), but at night it easily drops to -12°C (10°F) and even -20°C (-4°F) or lower during cold snaps.

Precipitation Seasons (June-August and December)

Peak rainfall occurs in the summer, often as strong afternoon thunderstorms triggered by the continental heat. Winter in Daugavpils is a true "white winter"—snow piles up high and stays on the ground for months, creating a spectacular frozen landscape but requiring preparation for the cold.
