Climate Characteristics of Degania Alef

General Overview

Degania Alef is characterized by a unique subtropical valley climate. Due to its location below sea level and the protection of the surrounding mountains (Poria Ridge and the Golan Heights), the climate here is significantly warmer than the national average. The Jordan Valley is known for its long, scorching summers and very short, mild winters.

Summer Season and Warm Months

Summer in Degania Alef is scorching and challenging. Noon temperatures consistently climb above 35°C (95°F) and in peak summer even cross 40°C (104°F). Humidity is relatively high due to the proximity to the Sea of Galilee and the Jordan River, creating very heavy heat stress. However, in the late afternoons, a westerly wind ("The Breeze") from the Galilee mountains sometimes penetrates, providing temporary relief.

Winter Season and Precipitation

Winter in Degania Alef is among the most pleasant in Israel. While the rest of the country is cold and stormy, daytime temperatures here usually remain above 18°C (64°F). Rains mostly fall in intense bursts, with an annual average of about 400 mm. Frost events are extremely rare due to the relatively warm water temperatures of the Sea of Galilee.

Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena

Transition seasons are very short and volatile. Spring is characterized by rich subtropical blooms and the scent of citrus filling the valley. A common phenomenon during these periods is the "Sharkiya" – strong, dry easterly winds descending from the Golan Heights, causing sharp temperature rises and sudden storms on the Sea of Galilee.

 

Weather in Degania Alef by Month

January

The coldest month, though far more pleasant than the national average. Daytime temperatures hover around 18°C (64°F), and at night they drop to an average of 10°C (50°F). This is the peak of the rainy season, and the valley is painted fresh green.

February

The comfortable winter continues. Temperatures are similar to January with many sunny days. This is an excellent time for trips around the Sea of Galilee before the heat arrives.

March

Early spring. Daytime temperatures rise to about 22°C (72°F). Citrus blooming is at its peak, and the valley air is filled with a sweet scent.

April

Warm spring weather. Daytime temperatures climb to 27°C (81°F), and nights are very pleasant (about 14°C/57°F). Visibility is excellent, making it one of the most pleasant months to be outdoors.

May

Significant warming toward 32°C (90°F). Days become sunny, and rain almost completely disappears. The feeling of summer is already here.

June

The start of the scorching summer. Noon temperatures cross 35°C (95°F). Heat stress is clearly felt, and activity shifts to early morning or evening hours.

July

A scorching and oppressive month. Daytime temperatures hover around 38°C (100°F), and humidity from the Sea of Galilee adds to the heavy feeling. Nights are warm (about 24°C/75°F) and provide no significant relief.

August

The peak of heat. Temperatures can reach 40°C (104°F) or more. The Sea of Galilee water is very warm, and the valley air is stagnant and burning. This is the most challenging month.

September

Autumn begins with slight signs of temperature drops (about 36°C/97°F during the day). Nights begin to cool slightly toward the end of the month.

October

Noticeable relief. Temperatures drop to 31°C (88°F) during the day, and nights become pleasant (about 20°C/68°F). First rains may occur, cleaning the air.

November

Entry into comfortable weather. Temperatures drop to 25°C (77°F) during the day, and the atmosphere becomes very pleasant. The landscape begins to turn green again with the rains.

December

The mild winter returns. Pleasant and sunny days with temperatures of about 20°C (68°F) during the day and 12°C (54°F) at night. The valley is quiet and blooming.
