Climate Characteristics of Galway

General Overview

Galway features a maritime temperate climate directly and intensely influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. The city is known as one of the rainiest and windiest cities in Ireland. Its weather is incredibly dynamic, where heavy rain clouds can disperse to reveal bright sunshine within minutes, only to return shortly after.

Summer Season and Warm Months

Summer in Galway is cool and refreshing. Average daytime temperatures range between 17°C and 19°C (63-66°F), and they very rarely exceed 23°C (73°F). This is the most vibrant time in the city due to numerous festivals, yet visitors are always equipped with light rain gear even in the middle of July.

Winter Season and Precipitation

Winter in Galway is not freezing but is very wet, stormy, and grey. Daytime temperatures average around 8°C (46°F), with nighttime lows near 3°C (37°F). The city is exposed to powerful Atlantic storms that bring strong winds and heavy rainfall. Due to the sea's influence, snow accumulation is rare.

Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena

Spring and autumn are seasons of wild beauty. Spring is characterized by brisk winds but also relatively clearer days, while autumn brings the famous combination of "sun and showers" that creates spectacular rainbows over Galway Bay. The choppy sea and Atlantic mists add a dramatic atmosphere to the city.

January

A stormy, wet, and cold month. Temperatures of 8°C (46°F) during the day and 3°C (37°F) at night. Ocean winds are very strong and skies are mostly grey.

February

Weather similar to January (about 8°C/46°F daytime). Frequent rains and sea mists are a common sight.

March

Start of spring. Days lengthen and the temperature rises to about 10°C (50°F). A volatile month where extreme weather changes can occur within hours.

April

Temperatures climb to about 12°C (54°F). Relatively one of the drier months (though it still rains), with more moments of sunshine.

May

A very pleasant month to visit with blooms and vivid green landscapes, averaging 15°C (59°F) during the day. Daylight hours lengthen significantly.

June

Summer begins with about 17°C (63°F) daytime. Comfortable weather but always expect rain. The sun sets very late.

July

One of the warmest months (about 19°C/66°F daytime). The city's atmosphere is at its peak due to festivals, despite frequent rain showers.

August

Similar to July with about 19°C (66°F) daytime. A relatively humid month with light breezes from the bay.

September
