Climate Characteristics of Gothenburg

Atlantic Front and Winds

Gothenburg is located on the west coast of Sweden. Unlike sheltered Stockholm, Gothenburg faces the North Sea directly. This means the city is windier, more humid, and is considered the rainiest city in Sweden. Western winds bring salty, fresh air but also sudden weather changes—an umbrella is a year-round essential here.

Mild but "Wet" Winter

Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Gothenburg's winter is among the mildest in Sweden. Temperatures rarely drop to extremes, usually hovering between 1°C and 2°C (34-36°F). However, the combination of low temperatures, high wind, and humidity creates a "bone-chilling" cold that feels much colder than the thermometer indicates. Snow falls but often turns quickly into slush due to maritime influence.

Fresh and Breezy Summer

Summer in Gothenburg is a delight for those who dislike extreme heat. Temperatures rarely exceed 22°C (72°F), and there is always a sea breeze.
