Climate Characteristics of Haapsalu

General Overview

Haapsalu is surrounded by water on three sides, granting it a distinct maritime climate similar to that of the islands. The city sits on very shallow bays that warm up faster than anywhere else along the Estonian Baltic coast. The climate is characterized by high humidity and refreshing sea breezes, with the sea acting as a regulator that maintains relatively mild winters and crisp, clear springs.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

In summer, daytime temperatures average between 20°C and 23°C (68-73°F). Due to the shallow bays, the air near the shore can feel warmer and more pleasant than in cities on the open sea. In winter, the average daytime temperature is around -1°C (30°F), with nights hovering around -5°C (23°F).

Precipitation Seasons (August-December)

Autumn is the rainiest season. The combination of shallow bays and high humidity contributes to thick morning fogs, giving the castle and the promenade a mysterious appearance. In winter, snow falls, and the bays freeze frequently, allowing for unique "ice roads" for vehicles connecting the city to nearby islands.

Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May-July)

This is the ideal time to visit Haapsalu. The skies are clear, and the city enjoys many sunny hours. June and July are the most beautiful for walking along the historic promenade and birdwatching. Humidity is relatively low in June, making the air clean and refreshing.

Stable maritime winter. -2°C (28°F) daytime. Skies are often grey, but the snow remains clean and white. This is the month when ice roads are usually safest, and the city is very quiet and peaceful.

March

Start of the gradual thaw. 2°C (36°F) daytime. More sunshine, but the frozen sea still radiates intense cold. A relatively bright but windy month where ice begins to crack near the shore.

April

Spring awakens slowly. 8°C (46°F) daytime. Snow disappears from the alleys and buds emerge in the city's gardens. Weather is volatile—sunny days alternate with very cold sea breezes.

May

Month of bloom and peace. 15°C (59°F) daytime. Blue skies and very clear air. This is the start of the hiking season, with parks around the castle filling with fresh green and low humidity.

June

The month of "White Nights." 19°C (66°F) daytime. The sun barely sets, and the promenade stays busy until late. The water in the shallow bays warms up faster than in the rest of the country.

The warmest and most popular month. 22°C (72°F) daytime and 13°C (55°F) at night. Ideal weather for vacation and swimming in the bays. Mostly sunny days with a light sea breeze preventing heat stress.

Continuation of refreshing summer. 21°C (70°F) daytime. Bay waters are at their warmest. Toward the end of the month, rainfall increases, and nights become humid with light mists appearing over the water.

September

Early and photogenic autumn. 16°C (61°F) daytime. Trees along the promenade turn golden. The air becomes crisp and refreshing, and sea winds strengthen again. Great time for birdwatching.

October

Windy and wet month. 10°C (50°F) daytime. Days shorten significantly and humidity rises. Autumn storms from the Baltic are common, and the ancient castle looks dramatic under grey skies.

November

Dark, grey, and chilly. 4°C (39°F) daytime. Almost no sunshine hours. Prolonged rains and heavy fogs are the central features. Temperatures usually remain above freezing due to the bay's influence.

December
