Climate Characteristics of Mount Hermon
General Overview
Mount Hermon is the highest region in Israel, and accordingly, it enjoys an alpine-mountainous climate. While the rest of the country experiences a Mediterranean climate, the Hermon has significantly lower temperatures year-round, characterized by heavy snowfall and extremely high winds.
Summer Season and Warm Months
The summer in the Hermon is cool and very pleasant compared to the oppressive heat in the rest of the country. While coastal areas exceed 30°C, the Hermon rarely sees temperatures above 25°C during the day. Humidity is very low, and the air is dry and clear, making it a refuge from summer humidity.
Winter Season and Precipitation
Winter on Mount Hermon is the coldest and stormiest in Israel. Most precipitation falls as snow, accumulating into a thick layer that remains on the ground for months. Winter temperatures are often below freezing, and blizzards accompanied by heavy fog and winds exceeding 100 km/h are common.
Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena
Transition seasons on the Hermon are characterized by rapid snowmelt in the spring, creating strong flows in the streams that feed the Jordan River sources. In the autumn, temperatures drop quickly, and the first snow events can occur as early as November.

January
January is the coldest month on Mount Hermon. Average daytime temperatures range from 2°C to 5°C, and at night they consistently drop below freezing. This is the peak of the snow season, and the mountain is typically covered in a deep layer of snow. Blizzards and heavy fog are very common.
February
February continues the extreme winter trend with very low temperatures. This is an excellent month for skiing, as the snow layer is usually at its maximum thickness. Precipitation is almost always snow, and winds at the peaks can be exceptionally strong.
March
March shows the first signs of warming, but winter is still very present. Temperatures rise slightly to an average of 8°C during the day, but snow can still fall frequently. It is a volatile month with sharp shifts between clear sunny days and short winter storms.
April
April marks the beginning of spring and snowmelt in the lower levels. Temperatures rise to about 12°C during the day. This is a spectacular time for blooms on the Hermon, as unique (endemic) plants begin to emerge from the melting snow layers.
May
In May, the weather becomes very pleasant and clear. Temperatures range around 18°C during the day, and humidity is low. Most snow in the lower levels has melted, though white patches can still be seen on the high peaks. The sky is generally blue and clear.
June
June opens the cool summer season of the Hermon. While the rest of the country heats up, average daytime temperatures on the Hermon are about 22°C. The air is very dry with no chance of precipitation, making it ideal for hiking without heat stress.
July
July is a dry and sunny month. Daytime temperatures hover around 24°C, and at night they drop to about 14°C, requiring long sleeves even in summer. There is no significant cloud cover, and visibility toward the Golan and Galilee is the best of the year.
August
August is the "hottest" month on the Hermon, though it remains much cooler than the national average. Temperatures peak at about 25°C-26°C during the day. It is a completely dry month, and the mountain vegetation becomes yellow and dry.
September
In September, the beginning of the temperature drop is felt. Days shorten and the air becomes cooler, especially in the evenings. Daytime temperatures drop to about 22°C, and the sky occasionally fills with high-level clouds.
October
October brings true autumn to the mountain. Temperatures drop to 16°C during the day, and nights become very cold (about 8°C). First rain events may occur, and very rarely, light snow flurries can happen on the highest peaks at the end of the month.
November
November is the transition month to winter. Temperatures drop to 10°C during the day and approach freezing at night. The first snow events become very likely, and winds strengthen significantly.
December
December officially opens the snowy winter season. Daytime temperatures are about 5°C, and at night they are consistently below freezing. The mountain starts to turn white, and serious winter systems bringing heavy snow become frequent.
