Climate Characteristics of Jūrmala

General Overview

Jūrmala is a long coastal strip located about 25 kilometers west of Riga. Its climate is a temperate-maritime climate directly influenced by the Baltic Sea and the sand dunes surrounded by pine forests. The sea acts as a "temperature regulator"—it makes summers in Jūrmala slightly cooler and fresher than inland, while winters are often less freezing but much windier and more humid.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

In summer, temperatures range from 20°C to 23°C (68-73°F), which is when the white sand beaches fill with vacationers. In winter, the average daytime temperature is around -1°C (30°F). Temperature differences between day and night are not extreme due to the proximity to water, but winds blowing from the Baltic Sea can make the "feels like" temperature much lower than the actual reading.

Precipitation Seasons (July-September and November-December)

Peak rainfall occurs during the late summer months, usually in the form of light showers that pass quickly. In autumn and winter, humidity rises significantly and precipitation turns into snow. Jūrmala under a blanket of snow, with the Baltic Sea partially frozen, is a spectacular sight but requires serious thermal clothing.

Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May-June)

This is the most beautiful time for those seeking peace and nature. The skies are clear, the pine forests emit an intoxicating scent, and the days are very long. The sea water is still too cold for swimming during this period, but the weather is perfect for long walks along the shoreline.

January Freezing and windy. -1°C (30°F) daytime and -6°C (21°F) at night. The sea sometimes freezes at the edges and the beach is covered in snow.

February The coldest month on the coast (-2°C/28°F daytime). Strong winds from the Baltic and grey skies.

March Start of the thaw. 3°C (37°F) daytime. The air is very humid and the winds are still cold.

April Spring awakening. 10°C (50°F) daytime. Volatile weather, but the first buds appear in the forests.

May Pleasant and refreshing. 16°C (61°F) daytime. The skies clear up, making it an excellent time for cycling in the dunes.

June Start of the official swimming season. 19°C (66°F) daytime. Very long days with late sunsets over the sea.

July Peak season. 22°C (72°F) daytime. The water begins to warm up (around 18°C-19°C). Warm and comfortable days.

August Warm and rainier (22°C/72°F daytime). The sea is at its warmest, but occasional showers are possible.

September End-of-season tranquility. 16°C (61°F) daytime. Autumn colors appear in the pine forests and the air is crisp.

October Cooling and autumn winds. 10°C (50°F) daytime. The sea becomes rougher and days shorten.

November Dark, humid, and chilly (4°C/39°F daytime). Heavy fogs often form over the coastline.

December Festive winter. 0°C (32°F) daytime and -4°C (25°F) at night. The town is decorated with Christmas lights and the air is freezing.
