Climate Characteristics of Kiruna

The Arctic Kingdom

Kiruna is located in Swedish Lapland, deep within the Arctic Circle. Nature's rules are different here: winter dominates for nearly seven months. The air is very dry, making -15°C feel more comfortable than a damp zero degrees in Stockholm. The city is famous for the Northern Lights in winter and the Midnight Sun in summer.

Winter of Darkness and Aurora

From December to early January, the sun does not rise (Polar Night). Instead, there is a magical "blue twilight" for about two hours at noon. This is prime time for the Aurora Borealis. Temperatures can plummet to -30°C or even -40°C, but the snow remains dry, crisp, and brilliant.

Summer of Eternal Sun

From June to July, the sun never sets. Temperatures are pleasant, around 15°C to 18°C (59-64°F), and the air is exceptionally clear. This is peak hiking season for Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest peak, as the Arctic tundra blooms with colorful moss and wildflowers.
