Climate Characteristics of Kiryat Ekron

General Overview

Kiryat Ekron is characterized by a typical Mediterranean climate common to Israel's inner lowlands (Shephelah). Due to its geographical location, it experiences a combination of moderating maritime influence from the Mediterranean Sea along with continental features, creating noticeable temperature differences between day and night.

Summer Season and Warm Months

Summer in Kiryat Ekron is long, hot, and very humid. Daytime temperatures range from 31°C to 33°C (88-91°F), and heat stress is clearly felt due to the high humidity levels typical of the region. However, being slightly further from the coast than shoreline cities, daytime humidity is marginally lower, though nights remain warm and humid.

Winter Season and Precipitation

The winter in the area is mild and rainy. Most precipitation falls between November and March, with an annual average of approximately 530 mm. Frost days (temperatures near freezing) are very rare, and the average temperature on a typical winter day hovers around 18°C (64°F).

Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena

Transition seasons are characterized by instability and frequent "Sharav" (heatwave) events. During these periods, dry easterly winds bring sharp temperature increases and a drastic drop in humidity. Occasionally, these seasons are also accompanied by localized thunderstorms and short, heavy rain showers.

January

January is the coldest and rainiest month of the year in Kiryat Ekron. Daytime temperatures hover around 17°C (63°F), and at night they drop to an average of 9°C (48°F). This is the peak of the rainy season, characterized by frequent rainy days occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms and cold westerly winds.

February

Winter continues in full force with low temperatures and high precipitation. February is similar to January in terms of cold, and the landscape around the settlement becomes green and blooming. Rainfall is still significant, but longer breaks between rain systems may begin to be felt.

March

Spring begins to show its first signs with temperatures rising to about 20°C (68°F) during the day. Rains are still present but their frequency decreases. It is a month characterized by rapid weather shifts—pleasant sunny days alongside cool rainy ones.

April

Especially pleasant spring weather visits the area. Temperatures climb to 24°C (75°F) during the day, and nights become more pleasant (about 12°C/54°F). Humidity is relatively low and visibility is excellent. Occasional short heatwaves may temporarily increase the heat.

May

Temperatures rise to about 27°C (81°F) and days become warm and sunny. Rain almost completely disappears. The atmosphere becomes summer-like, but the relative dryness (before the summer humidity sets in) keeps a very comfortable feeling in the shade.

June

June opens the official summer season. Daytime temperatures range around 30°C (86°F), and humidity begins to rise gradually. Skies are completely clear with no chance of precipitation. Heat stress begins to be felt during the afternoon hours.

July

A very hot and humid month. The average daytime temperature is 31°C (88°F), and nights are warm at about 22°C (72°F). The combination of heat and high humidity creates heavy heat stress felt throughout most of the day, with skies remaining cloudless.

August

The hottest and most humid month of the year. Temperatures range around 32°C (90°F) during the day, and at night they typically do not drop below 23°C (73°F). Heat stress is at its peak with no relief from precipitation. This is the most climatically challenging month in the Shephelah region.

September

The start of autumn brings a gradual relief from the heat, though humidity remains high. Daytime temperatures drop to 31°C (88°F), and nights become slightly more pleasant toward the end of the month. Skies occasionally begin to fill with partial cloud cover.

October

Significant relief in temperatures to an average of 28°C (82°F) during the day. Nights become cool and pleasant (about 17°C/63°F), and the first rains ("Yoreh") may occur toward the end of the month. The air becomes clearer and cleaner after the summer.

November

Temperatures drop to 23°C (73°F) during the day, and the atmosphere becomes wintry. Rainfall increases significantly (averaging about 60 mm), and winds strengthen. This is the transition month when long clothes are gradually worn again.

December

Winter officially returns to Kiryat Ekron. Temperatures drop to 18°C (64°F) during the day and 10°C (50°F) at night. Rainy days become frequent, and the sky is cloudy most of the time. The area fills with winter ponds, and vegetation starts to renew.
