Climate Characteristics of Klaipėda

General Overview

Klaipėda enjoys a distinct maritime climate, significantly different from the continental climate of Vilnius or Kaunas. The Baltic Sea acts as a massive temperature regulator: winters here are much milder than inland, but summers are cooler and windier. The city is known for rapid weather changes—a day that starts with bright sun can become stormy and rainy within minutes due to clouds moving in from the sea.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

In summer, daytime temperatures range from 19°C to 22°C (66-72°F), rarely crossing 25°C (77°F) due to the cooling sea breeze. In winter, Klaipėda is the warmest place in Lithuania; average daytime temperatures are around 1°C (34°F), and the proximity of the sea prevents temperatures from dropping to the extremes measured in the east. However, strong sea winds make the cold feel physically intense and biting.

Precipitation Seasons (September-December)

Autumn and early winter are the wettest and windiest periods. Klaipėda is exposed to Baltic storms bringing slanted rains and gale-force winds. Snow falls frequently but, due to relatively mild temperatures and salty humidity, it tends to melt faster than in Vilnius, often creating a mix of slush and mud on the streets.

Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May-June)

These are the brightest and driest months in the city. During this time, the sea is still cool, which prevents the development of heavy rain clouds. The air is very clear, making it the best time to enjoy the unique German architecture of the Old Town and the famous sand dunes of the nearby Curonian Spit.

The coldest month, but relatively mild for Lithuania. -1°C (30°F) daytime and -5°C (23°F) at night. Strong sea winds often bring wet snow. The Baltic Sea usually does not freeze completely in the port, keeping humidity high.

February

Typical maritime winter. 0°C (32°F) daytime. Characterized by grey skies and frequent cycles of freezing and thawing. Snow on the ground is unstable, and northern winds can be very piercing.

March

Start of the late maritime spring. 4°C (39°F) daytime. The cold sea keeps temperatures low and delays tree blooming. A relatively bright but windy month where more sunny days appear over the pier.

April

Slow awakening of nature. 9°C (48°F) daytime. While inland it is already warm, the sea breeze keeps Klaipėda cool. Weather is very volatile—spring sun can quickly be replaced by thick sea fog.

May

The brightest month. 15°C (59°F) daytime. Precipitation is very low and skies are mostly blue. Nature blooms intensely, and the fresh sea air makes walks in the Old Town and port exceptionally pleasant.

June

Start of a cool summer. 18°C (64°F) daytime. Days are very long and coastal light lasts until late. A great time for nature walks, though the sea water is still too cool for most to swim.

July

The warmest month and peak tourist season. 21°C (70°F) daytime and 14°C (57°F) at night. Temperatures are very comfortable and never oppressive. The Baltic Sea warms slightly, and sandy beaches fill with vacationers.

August

Continuation of the pleasant summer. 21°C (70°F) daytime. Sea water is at its warmest (around 18°C). Toward the end of the month, nights become more humid and the chance of summer showers increases.

September

Start of the windy autumn. 17°C (63°F) daytime. Temperatures drop slowly thanks to heat stored in the sea. Winds begin to strengthen, and skies become more dramatic with changing clouds over the water.

October

Significant cooling to 11°C (52°F) daytime. A month of Baltic autumn storms. Rains become more frequent and winds are very strong. The city takes on a melancholic and unique atmosphere with a salty sea scent.

November

A grey and wet month. 6°C (43°F) daytime. Almost no sunshine hours. High humidity and prolonged rains accompanied by heavy fogs are routine. One of the least pleasant months for outdoor activities due to wind and wetness.

December

Winter returns with temperatures around 2°C (36°F) daytime. The Old Town is decorated for the holidays. First snow often mixes with rain, and the port atmosphere is quiet and frozen, with ship lights reflecting in the dark water.
