Climate Characteristics of Kuressaare

General Overview

Kuressaare is located on the shores of the Gulf of Riga in the southern part of Saaremaa Island. Due to its position on an island in the heart of the Baltic Sea, its climate is the most maritime in Estonia. The sea acts as a massive "thermal battery": it stores heat in summer and releases it slowly in winter. Consequently, winters in Kuressaare are the mildest in Estonia, and spring arrives later than on the mainland as the surrounding cold sea delays the warming of the air. The city is famous for its impressive Bishop's Castle and its clean, healthy air.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

In summer, daytime temperatures average between 20°C and 23°C (68-73°F). Due to the constant sea breeze, it is almost never too hot. In winter, the average daytime temperature is around 0°C (32°F) or slightly above, with nights hovering around -3°C (27°F). This is a significant difference compared to frozen eastern Estonia. Day-to-night temperature variations are the minimal in the country thanks to the moderating influence of the water surrounding the island on all sides.

Precipitation Seasons (September-December)

Autumn is the dominant season for precipitation and wind. Baltic sea storms are common during this period, and humidity is very high. In winter, snow falls, but due to relatively moderate temperatures, it often melts or falls as freezing rain more frequently than in Tallinn or Tartu. Natural sea ventilation maintains high air quality but creates a "wet" cold sensation.

Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May-July)

This is the island's most beautiful period. May and June are the sunniest months in all of Estonia (the islands enjoy more sun hours than the mainland). The skies are clear, and the cool sea prevents the formation of heavy rain clouds. It is an ideal time for birdwatching, hiking in the island's wild nature, and visiting the famous windmills under clear blue skies.

January

The mildest January in Estonia relative to the rest of the country. Daytime temperatures are around 0°C (32°F) and -4°C (25°F) at night. The sea around the island often doesn't freeze completely, maintaining high humidity. Winds are strong, often carrying wet snow or freezing rain.

February

The coldest month on the island. -1°C (30°F) daytime. Despite the cold, temperatures rarely drop to the extremes seen on the mainland. Skies are mostly grey and the Baltic breeze blows steadily, requiring windproof clothing.

March

Spring arrives very slowly. 2°C (36°F) daytime. While snow is already melting on the mainland, the cold sea keeps temperatures low. It is a relatively bright but very cold and windy month.

April

Gradual awakening. 7°C (45°F) daytime. Ice near the shore disappears and vegetation begins to sprout. The sun starts to warm the Old Town streets, but the sea breeze remains very cold, a reminder that winter has just ended.

May

The month of sun. 14°C (57°F) daytime. One of the driest and sunniest months on the island. Apple and cherry blossoms are at their peak, and low humidity makes the air exceptionally clear.

June

The month of "White Nights" and celebrations. 18°C (64°F) daytime. The sun barely disappears, and temperatures are very comfortable. The sea is still cool (around 14°C/57°F), but beaches begin to fill with visitors enjoying the longest days of the year.

July

The warmest and most pleasant month. 21°C (70°F) daytime and 13°C (55°F) at night. Perfect weather for a family vacation. Mostly sunny days with low chance of rain. Water in the shallow bays reaches enjoyable swimming temperatures.

August

Continuation of maritime summer. 21°C (70°F) daytime. The sea is at its warmest and keeps daytime temperatures high even as nights begin to lengthen. Toward the end of the month, the chance of summer showers and passing thunderstorms increases.

September

Early and windy autumn. 16°C (61°F) daytime. Nature on the island begins to change colors. This is a month of strong winds attracting windsurfers and kiters, and the air becomes crisp and very fresh.

October

Month of storms and rain. 10°C (50°F) daytime. The Baltic Sea becomes rough and humidity rises significantly. Days shorten and skies become grey and dramatic over the ancient castle.

November

Dark, wet, and grey. 5°C (41°F) daytime. Almost no sunshine hours. Prolonged rains and heavy sea fogs are common. Temperatures remain above freezing thanks to the relatively warm bay waters.

December

Start of winter. 2°C (36°F) daytime and -1°C (30°F) at night. First snow begins to fall but usually doesn't accumulate into a thick layer due to sea proximity. The city is decorated with Christmas lights, and the atmosphere in the central square is magical despite the cold winds.
