Climate Characteristics of Liège

General Overview

Liège features a temperate oceanic climate with slight continental influences due to its location in eastern Belgium. The city experiences humid weather throughout the year, but because of its relative proximity to the Ardennes hills, temperatures can be slightly more extreme than in coastal cities – slightly warmer in summer and colder in winter.

Summer Season and Warm Months

Summer in Liège is pleasant and warm. Daytime temperatures range from 22°C to 24°C (72-75°F), making it the best time to enjoy the promenades along the Meuse River. Despite the warmth, summer rains and thunderstorms are a common sight, especially in the late afternoon and evening.

Winter Season and Precipitation

Winter in Liège is cool and grey. Daytime temperatures average around 6°C (43°F), with nighttime lows near 0°C (32°F). Due to its eastern location, the city is more exposed to cold air from central Europe, making snow and frost events slightly more frequent here than in Brussels or Antwerp.

Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena

Transition seasons in Liège are marked by frequent weather changes. Spring brings gradual warming but is very volatile, while autumn features heavy morning fogs over the Meuse and an increase in rainy days. The city's valley topography occasionally leads to cold air trapping in the mornings.

The weather remains cold with a daytime average of 7°C (45°F). Winds can add to the chill, but days are starting to lengthen slightly.

March

Beginning of spring with daytime temperatures of about 11°C (52°F). Volatile weather shifting between pleasant sunshine and cold rain showers.

Temperatures rise to about 15°C (59°F). Blossoms appear throughout the city, but one should account for sudden weather changes.

May

One of the most pleasant months. Temperatures climb to 19°C (66°F) and the city becomes green and lush. Days lengthen significantly.

June

Summer begins with an average of 22°C (72°F) during the day. Excellent weather for outdoor activities, though sporadic summer rains are possible.

The warmest month (average 24°C/75°F daytime). Hotter days are possible, but usually, the temperature remains comfortable.

August

Similar to July with 24°C (75°F) during the day. Afternoon thunderstorms are relatively common during this month.

September

Temperatures drop to an average of 20°C (68°F). The air is very pleasant, but evenings begin to cool down.

Autumn is felt with 15°C (59°F) during the day. Foliage along the river is spectacular, but there is an increase in precipitation and fog.

A grey and cool month with 9°C (48°F) during the day. The sun disappears behind clouds for extended periods and winds strengthen.
