Climate Characteristics of Liepāja

General Overview

Liepāja is located on the western coast of Latvia, nestled between the Baltic Sea and Lake Liepāja. Due to its maritime position, its climate is the most moderate in Latvia; winters here are less freezing than in Riga or the eastern regions, and summers are very fresh. However, Liepāja is famous for its strong winds blowing year-round, which significantly impact the "feels like" temperature.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

Average daytime temperatures in summer range from 18°C to 21°C (64-70°F), as the Baltic Sea keeps the air cool and prevents heavy heat. In winter, daytime temperatures hover around 1°C (34°F), dropping to -3°C to -5°C (23-27°F) at night. Due to high humidity and wind, the cold can feel very piercing even when the mercury isn't exceptionally low.

Precipitation Seasons (October-December)

Liepāja is a relatively rainy city, with peak precipitation occurring in late autumn and early winter. Rain is often accompanied by strong gales from the sea. Snow is common in winter but tends to melt faster than in inland Latvia due to the sea's moderating effect.

Spring and early summer are the driest months in Liepāja. During this period, there are far fewer rainy days, skies clear up, and it is the ideal time for walks along the white sand beach and exploring the city's magnificent architecture before summer humidity rises.
