Climate Characteristics of Luleå

The Frozen Bothnian Sea

Luleå’s most unique feature is its relationship with the sea. Unlike inland Kiruna, Luleå is a northern coastal city. In winter, the Gulf of Bothnia freezes completely, allowing the city to create "ice roads" (Isbanan)—wide tracks on the sea for skating, cycling, and even cars. Sea winds can be strong, but the water also moderates extreme temperature drops compared to the deep interior.

Winter of Light and Ice

Winter is long and stable, with temperatures typically between -7°C and -12°C (10-19°F). Unlike Kiruna, Luleå does not have a total Polar Night, but daylight is very limited in December. The snow is dry and stays for months, while the city remains one of the sunniest spots in northern Sweden during spring and summer.

The Archipelago Summer

With over 1,300 islands, summer is dedicated to the sea. Temperatures are pleasant, around 19-22°C (66-72°F). Due to the long daylight hours in June and July, the shallow coastal waters can warm up enough for swimming. The sun barely sets at the peak of the season.

January

The coldest month. -8°C (18°F) daytime and -15°C (5°F) at night. The sea is fully frozen. Daylight is minimal (approx. 4 hours), but the ice roads open for winter activities.

February

Stable, sunny winter. -7°C (19°F) daytime. Clear skies and brilliant sun reflecting off the ice. The best month for skating on the frozen sea under deep blue skies.

March

"Spring-Winter" (Vårvinter). -2°C (28°F) daytime. Temperatures rise but everything remains white. Strong sun and rapidly lengthening days make being outdoors very enjoyable.

April

The big thaw. 4°C (39°F) daytime. Snow disappears from streets and sea ice begins to break. Volatile weather with cold winds and occasional sleet.

May

Rapid awakening. 11°C (52°F) daytime. Once the ice is gone, nature turns green. High sunshine hours and clear maritime air make it a great time for birdwatching.

June

Month of White Nights. 17°C (63°F) daytime. The sun barely sets (approx. 23 hours of light). The archipelago wakes up; comfortable temperatures and fresh vegetation.

July

The warmest month. 21°C (70°F) daytime and 12°C (54°F) at night. Sunny and warm. Peak time for boating and swimming in shallow bays.

August

Refreshing summer. 19°C (66°F) daytime. Nights cool down and darkness gradually returns. Sea water is at its warmest, and morning mists are common.

September

Colorful, crisp autumn. 13°C (55°F) daytime. Yellow and orange foliage appears on the islands. Northern Lights reappear as the dark nights return.

October

Rapid cooling. 6°C (43°F) daytime. Days shorten and rains turn cold. First snow usually falls toward the end of the month as harbor waters begin to freeze.

November

Dark and grey. -1°C (30°F) daytime and -5°C (23°F) at night. Almost no sun. Snow starts to accumulate, brightening the city.

December

True winter and lights. -5°C (23°F) daytime and -11°C (12°F) at night. Daylight is at its minimum (approx. 3 hours). Festive lights glow and sea ice thickens.
