Climate Characteristics of Medellín

General Overview

Medellín is located in the Aburrá Valley within the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of about 1,500 meters (4,900 feet). This elevation grants it its famous nickname: "The City of Eternal Spring." The result is a highland tropical climate that remains pleasantly temperate year-round, avoiding the tropical heat of the coast and the chill of high-altitude Bogotá.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

Daytime temperatures consistently average between 26°C and 28°C (79-82°F), while nighttime lows drop to 15°C-17°C (59-63°F). It is ideal weather where it is rarely too hot or too cold. Due to its valley location, the air is usually very pleasant, though the midday sun can feel strong.

Rainy Seasons (April-May and October-November)

Similar to Bogotá, Medellín has two main rainy seasons. Rain typically appears as showers in the afternoon or evening. October is considered the wettest month. Even during these seasons, you can usually enjoy large parts of the day under clear skies before the rain arrives.

Dry Seasons (December-March and June-August)

These are the sunniest and driest periods. These months are characterized by clear days and light breezes. January is the driest month, making it an excellent time for festivals and outdoor activities.

August Similar to July (28°C/82°F daytime). This is the month of the famous Flower Festival (Feria de las Flores) under clear skies.
