Climate Characteristics of Mendoza

General Overview

Mendoza features a semi-arid continental climate. Located in a high desert region (about 750 meters / 2,460 feet above sea level), it experiences significant temperature variations between day and night and across seasons. Thanks to a sophisticated irrigation system of canals (Acequias) carrying meltwater from the Andes, the city appears as a green oasis in the middle of an arid region.

Summer and Warm Months (December to February)

Summer in Mendoza is very hot and often scorching during midday. Daytime temperatures range between 30°C and 33°C (86-91°F) but can climb above 40°C (104°F). This is also the wettest season due to intense and sudden afternoon thunderstorms that provide temporary relief from the heat.

Winter Season (June to August)

Winter is dry, clear, and cold. Days are sunny and pleasant (around 14°C to 16°C / 57-61°F), but nights are very cold, frequently dropping below 0°C (32°F). Snow in the city is quite rare, but the nearby Andes are covered in white, offering a spectacular view.

Transition Seasons and the "Zonda" Wind

Autumn (March-May) is considered the most beautiful time to visit due to the colors of the vineyards and the golden foliage within the city. A unique climatic phenomenon is the Zonda—a very hot and dry wind coming from the Andes that can cause extreme temperature spikes within minutes and bring significant dust.

February

Still very hot (31°C/88°F daytime). Month of the famous "Vendimia" harvest festival.

March

Start of autumn. Pleasant and warm weather (28°C/82°F daytime) with refreshing nights.

April

Perfect month to visit. Foliage at its peak, clear days, and daytime temperature of 23°C (73°F).

May

Cool and dry autumn (19°C/66°F daytime). Nights start to get very cold (6°C/43°F).

June

Start of winter. Dry and clear (15°C/59°F daytime). Excellent time for viewing the snowy mountains.

July

The coldest month. 14°C (57°F) daytime and nights near freezing. Mostly sunny days.

August

Similar to July (17°C/63°F daytime). Strong Zonda winds may occur, raising the temperature suddenly.

September

Start of spring. Gradual warming (21°C/70°F daytime). Vineyard blooming begins.

October

Pleasant and clear month. 24°C (75°F) daytime. Ideal weather for outdoor wine tours.

November

Warm spring (28°C/82°F daytime). Long and sunny days before the intense summer heat.

December

Start of the hot summer. Temperatures rise to 31°C (88°F). Popular time for year-end holidays.
