Climate Characteristics of Monterrey

General Overview

Monterrey features a hot semi-arid climate. Due to its northern location and proximity to the desert, the weather here is much more extreme than in central Mexico. Summers are scorching and long, while winters are short and can bring sudden, extreme temperature drops due to cold air masses from the north.

Summer and Warm Months (May to September)

Summer in Monterrey is hot and often humid. Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 35°C (95°F) and can even reach 40°C (104°F) or more. Although it is the hot season, most annual rainfall occurs in late summer and autumn (August-September) as a result of intense thunderstorms or tropical storm influences from the Gulf.

Winter Season (December to February)

Winter in Monterrey is generally mild but completely unpredictable. One day can be sunny and pleasant (20°C/68°F), and the next, temperatures can plunge near 0°C (32°F) due to cold fronts known as "Nortes". Snow is an extremely rare event in the city itself but is common in the surrounding mountains.

Spring Season (March and April)

Spring in Monterrey is very short and quickly turns hot. This is a time of strong winds and dust, but also the period when nature around the city is relatively green before the intense heat of July.

January

The coldest but most volatile month. Pleasant days (20°C/68°F) alongside cool nights (8°C/46°F). Very cold days with drizzle are possible.

February

Starting to warm up. Days around 23°C (73°F). Skies are mostly clear, but cold fronts are still possible.

March

Spring arrives quickly. Temperatures climb to 27°C (81°F) during the day. The air is dry and winds strengthen.

April

Very hot. Average of 30°C (86°F) daytime. It is a relatively dry month with strong sun.

May

Start of the heavy heat. Temperatures of 33°C (91°F) daytime. Humidity starts to rise, and the first thunderstorms may occur.

June

Scorching. Average of 35°C (95°F) daytime (often higher). The sun is burning, and air conditioning is needed everywhere.

July

Peak of summer. A dry and hot month with 36°C (97°F) daytime. Almost no clouds in the sky.

August

Hot and rainier. 35°C (95°F) daytime, but precipitation increases due to intense afternoon storms.

September

The wettest month. Temperatures drop slightly to 32°C (90°F), but humidity is very high.

October

Pleasant autumn. Temperatures drop to 28°C (82°F) daytime with refreshing nights (16°C/61°F). Excellent time to visit.

November

Clear and comfortable. Days around 24°C (75°F) and nights cool down (12°C/54°F). Relatively stable weather.

December

Wintry and mild. 21°C (70°F) daytime and 9°C (48°F) at night. Mostly clear skies but a chance of morning fog.
