Climate Characteristics of Nahalal

General Overview

Nahalal enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate characteristic of the interior and the Jezreel Valley. Due to its location in a wide valley surrounded by mountains, the climate in the moshav is influenced by topographical phenomena such as cold air accumulation on winter nights and significant heat stress in summer, with a more moderate maritime influence than on the coastal plain.

Summer Season and Warm Months

Summer in Nahalal is mostly hot and dry during the day. Average noon temperatures range from 32°C to 34°C (90-93°F). Unlike the coastal plain, humidity here is lower during peak hours, but due to the valley's structure, heat stress can be heavy, and the air sometimes remains stagnant without a significant breeze until late evening.

Winter Season and Precipitation

Winter in Nahalal is characterized by cool and very rainy weather. The area is considered particularly fertile due to healthy precipitation, averaging about 550 mm annually. On clear winter nights, cold air flows from the surrounding mountains (Carmel and Nazareth hills) to the valley floor, which can cause very low temperatures and even frost in the moshav's fields.

Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena

Transition seasons in Nahalal feature excellent visibility and weather fluctuations. Spring is the peak season for valley agriculture with spectacular blooms everywhere. In autumn, morning mists are a common phenomenon, as cold, moist air accumulates over the ground, creating picturesque scenes over the moshav's houses and fields.

 

Weather in Nahalal by Month

January

January is the coldest and rainiest month of the year. Daytime temperatures hover around 17°C (63°F), and at night they drop to an average of 8°C (46°F). This is the peak of the valley's rainy season, characterized by water-saturated soil, large winter ponds in the fields, and clear, cold air between rain systems.

February

Winter continues in full force with low temperatures and high precipitation. February is similar to January in terms of cold, and the valley surrounding Nahalal turns bright green. Rainy days are still very frequent, and on clear nights, there is a danger of frost for sensitive plants in gardens and orchards.

March

March marks the transition from winter to spring with a gradual daytime temperature rise to about 20°C (68°F). It is a volatile month where warm sunny days quickly alternate with rain showers. Spring blooms are at their peak, and the valley looks its best this month.

April

Especially pleasant spring weather visits the moshav. Temperatures climb to 24°C (75°F) during the day, and nights are pleasant (about 11°C/52°F). Humidity is low, and visibility across the valley is excellent. Occasional spring heatwaves may bring light haze and warm winds.

May

Temperatures rise to about 28°C (82°F) and days become very warm and sunny. Rain almost completely disappears. The atmosphere becomes summer-like, but the relative dryness of the interior maintains a comfortable feeling in the shade.

June

June opens the official summer season. Daytime temperatures range around 30°C (86°F), and the sun is very strong throughout the day. There is no chance of precipitation, and humidity begins to rise gradually, though it remains significantly lower than in coastal cities.

July

A very hot and dry month during the day. The average noon temperature is 32°C (90°F), and nights are warm at about 21°C (70°F). Heat stress is clearly felt, and due to the valley's structure, the air may feel stagnant and very hot in the afternoon.

August

The hottest month of the year. Temperatures range around 33°C (91°F) during the day, and at night they remain high. Heat stress is at its peak with no relief from precipitation. This is the most climatically challenging month for farmers and residents in Nahalal.

September

The start of autumn brings a gradual relief from daytime heat. Temperatures drop to 31°C (88°F), and nights become slightly more pleasant. Occasionally, an increase in humidity is felt, arriving with westerly winds toward the end of the month.

October

Significant relief in temperatures to an average of 28°C (82°F) during the day. Nights become cool and pleasant (about 17°C/63°F), and the first rains ("Yoreh") may occur. Characteristic valley mists begin to appear in the early morning hours.

November

Temperatures drop to 23°C (73°F) during the day, and the atmosphere becomes wintry. Rainfall increases significantly, and winds strengthen. This is the transition month when fields are re-sown and the landscape shifts from dry to green.

December

Winter officially returns to Nahalal. Temperatures drop to 18°C (64°F) during the day and 10°C (50°F) at night. Rainy days are frequent, and the sky is cloudy most of the time. The valley's heavy soil becomes very muddy, and the scent of rain and earth is felt throughout the moshav.
