Climate Characteristics of Narva
General Overview
Narva is situated on the banks of the Narva River, which connects Lake Peipus to the Gulf of Finland. Due to its eastern location and relative distance from the open sea, the climate in Narva is more continental than in other Estonian coastal cities. Winters here are among the longest and coldest in the country, while summers tend to be warmer and more humid. The city is known for cold northeasterly winds and significant snowfall that covers the ancient castle for months.
Temperatures and Daily Variations
In summer, daytime temperatures average between 22°C and 25°C (72-77°F), and at the height of heatwaves, they can exceed 28°C (82°F). In winter, the average daytime temperature is around -4°C (25°F), dropping to -12°C (10°F) or even lower on cold nights. Due to the lack of maritime moderation, there are significant differences between midday and nighttime temperatures, especially in winter and early spring.
Precipitation Seasons (June-August and November)
Summer in Narva is the wettest period, with powerful thunderstorms and heavy rains common after hot days. Late autumn (November) is characterized by cold rains and heavy fogs rising from the river. In winter, snow is very stable and stays on the ground for long periods, making the area a center for traditional winter activities.
Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May and September)
May is the month of awakening, where the river flows powerfully and nature turns vibrant green in a short time. September offers relatively stable weather with blue skies and crisp air. This is an excellent time for walks along the new river promenade and the castle walls before the eastern cold sets in.
