Climate Characteristics of Nida
General Overview
Nida enjoys a maritime climate that is quite extreme compared to the rest of Lithuania. Situated on a narrow strip of land between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon, its weather is uniquely influenced by water on both sides. The massive sand dunes and the open sea create specific conditions: winters are the mildest in the country, and summers are the sunniest.
Temperatures and Daily Variations
In summer, daytime temperatures average between 20°C and 23°C (68-73°F). Due to the sea breeze, there is almost no heat stress, and nights are fresh. In winter, the average daytime temperature is around 1°C (34°F), and the Baltic Sea prevents deep freezing. However, the salty humidity and strong winds make the cold feel very piercing.
Precipitation Seasons (September-December)
Autumn is the stormiest and rainiest season. Nida is exposed to powerful Baltic storms that shape the coastline. In winter, snow falls, but due to maritime influence, it tends to melt faster than inland. The lagoon often freezes, creating an infinite ice surface on one side of the town.
Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May-June)
This is Nida's golden period. These months are the sunniest in all of Lithuania. The skies are deep blue, the dunes glow in the sun, and the cold sea prevents rain clouds from forming. Ideal for hiking the Parnidis dune and cycling before the July crowds.

The mildest month in Lithuania. 1°C (34°F) daytime and -3°C (27°F) at night. Very strong sea winds often bring wet snow. The lagoon may freeze over, while the Baltic Sea remains open and rough.
February
Cold maritime winter. 0°C (32°F) daytime. Characterized by grey skies and strong northern winds. Windproof clothing is essential as the humidity and wind make it feel much colder.
March
Start of the late maritime spring. 3°C (37°F) daytime. The cold sea delays warming, but the sun appears more frequently. A relatively bright but cold month.

Gradual awakening. 8°C (46°F) daytime. Snow disappears and dunes begin to warm. Weather is volatile—sunny days can quickly turn into thick sea fog covering the entire spit.

The sunniest and clearest month. 15°C (59°F) daytime. Precipitation is at its annual minimum. The light in Nida is breathtaking during this month.
June
Start of summer and "White Nights." 18°C (64°F) daytime. Days are incredibly long and sunsets over the Baltic last for hours. Comfortable for outdoor activities, though the water is still chilly.
July
The warmest and most popular month. 22°C (72°F) daytime and 14°C (57°F) at night. Perfect beach vacation weather. The air is filled with the scent of pines and salt.
August
Continuation of pleasant summer. 22°C (72°F) daytime. Sea water is at its warmest. A relatively stable month, though nights become more humid toward the end.
September
Early and photogenic autumn. 17°C (63°F) daytime. Temperatures drop slowly. Autumn colors appear in the forests and dunes take on a deep golden hue.
October
Month of storms. 11°C (52°F) daytime. The Baltic Sea becomes very rough with high waves. Rains become frequent and winds are strong and dramatic.
November
Dark, wet, and grey. 6°C (43°F) daytime. Almost no sunshine. High humidity and heavy fogs from the lagoon are common.
December
Start of winter. 2°C (36°F) daytime and -2°C (28°F) at night. Nida's colorful wooden houses are decorated for the holidays. First snow may cover the dunes in white.
