Climate Characteristics of Pärnu

General Overview

Pärnu is situated on the shores of Pärnu Bay in the northeastern Baltic Sea. Due to the bay's shallow waters, Pärnu enjoys the warmest sea temperatures in Estonia and the rest of the Baltic states during summer. Its climate is maritime-temperate, characterized by relatively mild winters compared to the interior and sunny summers that make it the country's primary resort destination.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

In summer, daytime temperatures average between 21°C and 24°C (70-75°F), and the sea breeze keeps the air pleasant and fresh. In winter, the average daytime temperature is around -1°C (30°F), dropping to -6°C (21°F) at night. Due to the proximity to water, winter cold is less extreme than in Tartu, but the humidity and sea winds can make the cold feel "wet" and piercing.

Precipitation Seasons (August-December)

Autumn is the rainiest season in Pärnu. The combination of relatively warm water and cold air arriving from the north often creates spectacular autumn storms and prolonged rainfall. In winter, snow is common but often alternates with freezing rain due to the maritime influence, creating slippery ground conditions.

Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May-July)

This is the city's golden period. May and June are the sunniest and driest months. During this time, the water begins to warm rapidly, and long days allow for many hours spent outdoors. Humidity is lowest in June, making the weather perfect for walking and cycling.

Cold maritime winter. -2°C (28°F) daytime. Snow accumulation on the beach and in parks is at its peak. Days lengthen, but the sky is mostly grey. High humidity makes the cold feel more intense.

March

The start of the thaw. 3°C (37°F) daytime. Bay ice begins to break, creating impressive sights along the coastline. The sun appears more frequently, but the air remains cool and windy.

April

Spring awakening. 9°C (48°F) daytime. Snow disappears quickly from the sandy beaches. Weather is still volatile—bright days alternate with cold rains, but nature begins to show its first green.

May

The month of blooming and sun. 16°C (61°F) daytime. Skies are blue most of the time and humidity is low. The city begins to fill with early tourists and the atmosphere becomes summer-like and pleasant.

June

Start of the swimming season and "White Nights." 19°C (66°F) daytime. The sun barely sets, and the city is particularly vibrant. The bay water starts reaching temperatures suitable for swimming (around 18°C/64°F).

July

The warmest and most popular month. 23°C (73°F) daytime and 14°C (57°F) at night. Sunny and warm days. This is the peak time for beach cafes and water activities. Short, refreshing summer showers are possible.

August

Continuation of summer with 22°C (72°F) daytime. The bay water is at its warmest (can reach 22°C/72°F). Rainfall increases toward the end of the month and nights become humid and pleasant.

September

Early and pleasant autumn. 16°C (61°F) daytime. Skies return to being clear and the air becomes crisp and refreshing. Autumn colors appear in the magnificent parks along the coast.

October

Cooling and autumn winds. 10°C (50°F) daytime. The sea becomes rougher and days shorten significantly. A rainy month characterized by a quick transition from pleasant weather to autumn cold.

November

A dark and grey month. 4°C (39°F) daytime. Most of the time the sky is covered in heavy clouds. Sea winds strengthen and there is a probability of first snow mixed with cold rain.

December

Winter returns. 0°C (32°F) daytime and -4°C (25°F) at night. The city is decorated with Christmas lights. The first snow accumulates on the beach sand, creating a unique "snowy beach" look.
