Climate Characteristics of Puerto Iguazú

General Overview

Puerto Iguazú features a humid subtropical/tropical climate. Unlike Buenos Aires, it is hot and humid year-round, and the region does not experience a true dry season—rain can fall at any time. Surrounded by dense rainforest, the area has very high humidity levels that intensify the sensation of heat.

Summer and Warm Months (December to March)

Summer here is scorching and stifling. Daytime temperatures regularly climb above 32°C (90°F), and the combination with humidity creates heavy heat stress. This is when the falls are at their peak water volume, but visiting can be tiring due to the heat. Intense and sudden tropical thunderstorms are very common in the afternoons.

Winter Season (June to August)

Winter in Puerto Iguazú is among the mildest and most pleasant in Argentina. Daytime temperatures are very comfortable (around 23°C to 25°C / 73-77°F) and nights are fresh but not freezing (about 14°C / 57°F). This is a very popular time to visit the falls for those wishing to avoid extreme heat, though rainy days are still possible.

Precipitation and Humidity

Rain is an integral part of the Iguazú experience. There is no "dry" month, and the annual rainfall is among the highest in the country. Humidity stays around 80% throughout most of the year, keeping the vegetation lush and evergreen.

January

Very hot and humid. 33°C (91°F) daytime and 22°C (72°F) at night. Frequent tropical rains and strong water flow in the falls.

February

Similar to January. Heavy heat (32°C/90°F daytime) and high humidity. Skies shift quickly between scorching sun and pouring rain.

March

Still hot but with slight relief. 31°C (88°F) daytime. This is a relatively rainy month.

April

Excellent time to visit. Temperatures drop to a more comfortable 28°C (82°F) and humidity decreases slightly.

May

Very pleasant. 25°C (77°F) daytime and cool, pleasant nights (15°C/59°F). Skies are clearer.

June

Mild winter. 23°C (73°F) daytime. Cloudy days and light rain are possible, but the weather is very comfortable for tours.

July

The coldest month (relatively). 22°C (72°F) daytime and 13°C (55°F) at night. Spring-like, pleasant weather.

August

Temperatures begin to rise (25°C/77°F daytime). A very comfortable month with relatively less precipitation.

September

Noticeable warming. 27°C (81°F) daytime. Humidity starts rising again toward spring.

October

Hot and very rainy. 29°C (84°F) daytime. One of the wettest months of the year.

November

Hot and humid. 31°C (88°F) daytime. The atmosphere becomes more tropical and stifling.

December

Start of the scorching summer. 32°C (90°F) daytime. Afternoon thunderstorms become routine.
