Climate Characteristics of Rēzekne

General Overview

Rēzekne is located in the hilly region of eastern Latvia, known as the "Heart of Latgale." Due to its eastern position and its maximum distance (approx. 250 km) from the Baltic Sea, it does not benefit from the sea's moderating influence. This results in a distinctly continental climate: winters are the longest and coldest in Latvia, and summers can be warmer and more humid compared to the coast. The area is surrounded by numerous lakes, which influence local humidity and create heavy fogs during transition seasons.

Average daytime temperatures in summer range from 23°C to 26°C (73-79°F), but continental heatwaves can easily push them above 30°C (86°F). In winter, temperatures drop significantly; the daytime average is -5°C (23°F), but on deep winter nights, they can plummet to -20°C (-4°F) or even -30°C (-22°F) in extreme cases. Due to the dry continental air, the difference between day and night temperatures is more noticeable here than elsewhere in Latvia.

Precipitation Seasons (June-August and December-January)

Peak rainfall occurs during the summer months, often as powerful thunderstorms and heavy rains following particularly hot days. In winter, Rēzekne is Latvia’s "Snow Queen." Snow accumulates to significant heights and stays on the ground longer than in any other region, sometimes until mid-April.

May brings a dramatic awakening of nature, with the hills around the city turning vibrant green almost overnight. September is a relatively stable month with crisp days and clear skies. The air in Rēzekne feels exceptionally pure and clean during these seasons, and visibility from the hills overlooking the city is at its best.

The coldest month of the year. Daytime temperatures are around -5°C (23°F) and drop to -12°C (10°F) on average at night. The city is buried under deep snow and local lakes are frozen solid. The air is very dry and freezing, creating clear but piercingly cold skies.

Harsh continental winter. The average daytime temperature is -4°C (25°F). Snow depth reaches its maximum. Eastern winds bring bitter cold from the east, and days are generally cloudy and grey, though some bright freezing days occur.

March

The start of slow thawing. 2°C (36°F) during the day. Although the sun begins to warm, the ground remains frozen and the snow disappears very slowly. This is a month of mud and sharp changes, where sunny spring days can turn into late snowstorms within hours.

April

Spring arrives all at once. 11°C (52°F) during the day. The snow disappears and vegetation wakes up rapidly. Days lengthen and the air becomes more humid. By the end of the month, the first blooms can be seen on the hills.

May

The most pleasant month for visiting. 18°C (64°F) during the day. Skies are clear and temperatures are ideal. The forests around the city are fresh and green, and humidity is very low, allowing for comfortable long hikes.

June

The start of summer and "White Nights." 22°C (72°F) during the day. Days are incredibly long and the sun is strong. It is a very warm month, but it also marks the beginning of the rainy season, with short thunderstorms likely in the evenings.

July

The warmest month. 25°C (77°F) during the day and 13°C (55°F) at night. Warm days that can feel heavy due to humidity rising from the lakes. This is the peak time for swimming in Latgale's many lakes as water temperatures reach comfortable levels.

August

Warm continental summer. 24°C (75°F) during the day. Days remain very warm, but nights start to cool down rapidly toward 12°C (54°F). Rainfall increases toward the end of the month, and Latgale’s famous morning mists begin to appear over the fields.

September

Golden and clear autumn. 17°C (63°F) during the day. Skies return to deep blue. Temperatures drop but the air is very pleasant. Forests change to orange and yellow, and it is a prime time for berry and mushroom picking.

October

Significant cooling to 9°C (48°F) during the day. Days become shorter and greyer. Humidity rises and there are many rainy days. Winds strengthen and the city takes on a wintry look as the trees lose their leaves.

November

A chilly and dark month. 2°C (36°F) during the day. Skies are covered in heavy clouds and most days feature freezing rain or first snow that doesn't always stick. The air feels wet and very cold.

December

Winter returns in full force. -2°C (28°F) during the day and -7°C (19°F) at night. The city enters a frozen state. Snow begins to accumulate again, and the atmosphere becomes festive with Christmas decorations sparkling against the white snow.
