Climate Characteristics of Riga

General Overview

Riga is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Riga in the Baltic Sea. Its climate is temperate-maritime. Unlike the cities in Colombia, there are extreme differences between the seasons here. Winters in Riga are long, grey, and cold, while summers are short but very pleasant with exceptionally long days (known as "White Nights" in June).

Temperatures and Daily Variations

Average daytime temperatures in summer (July) hover around 20°C to 23°C (68-73°F), while in winter (January), daytime temperatures are often below freezing, around -2°C (28°F), and at night they drop to -8°C (18°F) or lower. Temperature changes between day and night are not as sharp as in a desert, but the transition between seasons requires a completely different wardrobe.

Precipitation Seasons (July-August and November-December)

Rain falls in Latvia throughout the year. Summer is surprisingly the period with the highest rainfall, usually as light but prolonged rain. In late autumn and winter, precipitation turns into snow, covering the city and creating a classic European look.

Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May-June and September)

Late spring and early autumn are the most beautiful times to visit. The skies tend to be clearer, blooming is at its peak (in May) or autumn colors appear (in September), and the weather is comfortable for hiking before the intense cold of winter.

January The coldest month. -2°C (28°F) daytime and -8°C (18°F) at night. The city is usually snowy and days are very short.

February Freezing and snowy (-2°C/28°F daytime). Bright, cold days with winds from the Baltic Sea.

March Start of the thaw. 3°C (37°F) daytime. Snow begins to disappear and days get longer.

April Spring arrives. 11°C (52°F) daytime. Volatile weather ranging from warm days to cold rain showers.

May Blooming and pleasant month. 17°C (63°F) daytime. Ideal time for walking in the city's parks.

June Start of summer and White Nights. 20°C (68°F) daytime. The sun barely sets around June 24th.

July The warmest and rainiest month. 23°C (73°F) daytime. Warm days with occasional rainstorms.

August Still warm (22°C/72°F daytime). The Baltic Sea is at its maximum temperature, suitable for visiting beaches.

September Start of autumn colors. 16°C (61°F) daytime. Cool and pleasant weather with spectacular fall foliage.

October Significant cooling. 10°C (50°F) daytime. Grey days and stronger winds.

November Dark and chilly month (4°C/39°F daytime). Chance of first snow toward the end of the month.

December Festive winter. -1°C (30°F) daytime and -5°C (23°F) at night. Christmas markets are active and the city is decorated.
