Climate Characteristics of Santa Marta

General Overview

Santa Marta is a port city located on the Caribbean coast in northern Colombia. Unlike cool Bogotá, Santa Marta is characterized by a dry tropical climate. It is considered one of the hottest cities in Colombia, with consistently high temperatures year-round, significant humidity, and strong sea breezes that provide some relief from the heat.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

Daytime temperatures consistently average between 30°C and 33°C (86-91°F), while nighttime lows drop to 24°C-26°C (75-79°F). You won't experience "four seasons in one day" here; heat and sun are dominant from the early morning. High humidity often makes the "feels like" temperature higher than the actual reading.

Rainy Seasons (September-November)

This is the wettest period of the year. The rain is tropical—heavy, short bursts, usually in the late afternoon or at night, after which the sun typically reappears quickly. October is generally the wettest month of the year.

Dry Seasons (December-April)

This is the most popular time to visit. Skies are blue and clear with almost no rainfall. During these months, strong trade winds (known as "Brisa") blow from the north, cooling the city and making outdoor activities much more comfortable.
