Climate Characteristics of Sdot Yam
General Overview
Sdot Yam enjoys a distinct coastal Mediterranean climate. The kibbutz's location on the Mediterranean shore grants it direct maritime influence that moderates temperatures year-round – summers are hot but less scorching than inland, and winters are mild without reaching frost. Humidity in Sdot Yam is very high throughout most of the year due to the immediate proximity to the water.
Summer Season and Warm Months
Summer in Sdot Yam is hot and very humid. Daytime temperatures range from 30°C to 31°C (86-88°F), but high humidity levels make the heat stress heavy. The kibbutz's main advantage is the constant sea breeze blowing from the sea toward the land in the afternoons and evenings, which significantly eases the feeling and cools the air.
Winter Season and Precipitation
The winter in Sdot Yam is rainy and stormy. The Mediterranean Sea maintains relatively comfortable daytime temperatures (about 18°C/64°F) and generally prevents them from dropping below 10°C (50°F) at night. However, the settlement is exposed to powerful westerly storms bringing heavy rain, fierce winds, and salty spray that covers buildings and vegetation near the shore.
Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena
Transition seasons are short and very volatile. Spring features days of excellent visibility where the Carmel range can be clearly seen to the north. Autumn is characterized by developed morning clouds over the sea and rapid changes in wave conditions. During these periods, "Sharav" (heatwave) events may occur where easterly winds push humidity away from the coast, making the air temporarily very dry.
Weather in Sdot Yam by Month
January
January is the rainiest and stormiest month of the year. Daytime temperatures range around 17°C, and at night they drop to 10°C on average. Winds from the sea are very strong, and the sea is often rough or stormy. Numerous winter systems bring heavy rain to the coast.
February
Winter continues in full force with low temperatures and wavy seas. February is similar to January, but the start of coastal blooming can be seen around the nearby ancient Caesarea site. Rains are still frequent, and air humidity remains very high.
March
March is a transition month where the sea begins to calm slightly. Daytime temperatures rise to 19°C, and days become brighter and longer. Strong rainstorms can still occur, but they are generally short and followed by exceptionally clear air.
April
Especially pleasant spring weather. Temperatures climb to 22°C during the day, and humidity is not yet as oppressive as in summer. Visibility over the bays is excellent, making it one of the most pleasant months to be on the beach. Occasional short heatwaves may occur.
May
Temperatures rise to about 25°C, and days become warm and sunny. Rain almost completely disappears. The sea breeze begins to be felt more consistently in the afternoon, maintaining a pleasant feeling despite strong radiation.

August
The most challenging month in terms of humidity and heat. Temperatures range around 31°C during the day, and humidity is at its peak. Nights are sticky and warm, and the sea is at its maximum temperature, preventing the air from cooling significantly at night.
