Climate Characteristics of Sigulda
General Overview
Sigulda is located within the Gauja National Park, about 50 km northeast of Riga. Its climate is temperate continental, but its position on the edge of a deep valley surrounded by dense forests creates a unique micro-climate. The forests increase humidity, and in winter, the valley tends to "trap" cold air and mist, making it one of the best spots in Latvia for winter sports and autumn foliage.
Temperatures and Daily Variations
In summer, daytime temperatures average between 20°C and 22°C (68-72°F). Due to the dense forest cover, the air feels fresh and cooler than in larger cities. In winter, the average daytime temperature is around -3°C (27°F), dropping to -9°C (16°F) or lower at night. Due to the topography, temperatures inside the valley can be 2-3 degrees lower than in the surrounding open areas.
Precipitation Seasons (June-August and October-November)
Summer in Sigulda is the wettest period, often with showers accompanied by mists within the valley. In autumn, precipitation becomes more frequent, turning into snow toward the end of November. Sigulda is known for its snow lasting longer than in Riga, allowing for a relatively long ski season at local resorts.
Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May and September)
May is the blooming month, when the valley is painted fresh green and visibility from the castles overlooking the river is at its best. September and early October are Sigulda's "Golden Age"—thousands of tourists visit to witness the most famous golden autumn foliage in Latvia under crisp, clear skies.
