Climate Characteristics of Sønderborg

General Overview

Sønderborg features a temperate oceanic climate. Due to its relatively southern location and its position on the Baltic Sea (which is more sheltered than the North Sea), the climate here is considered one of the mildest and most pleasant in Denmark. The city enjoys less freezing winters and slightly warmer summers than the north of the country.

Summer Season (June to August)

Summer in Sønderborg is the most popular time for visiting. Daytime temperatures range between 20°C and 23°C (68-73°F). This is a perfect time for visiting Sønderborg Castle or sailing in the bay, as the water here tends to be calmer and warmer than the Danish average. The Baltic Sea breeze is soft and very pleasant.

Winter Season (December to February)

Winter is relatively mild but humid and grey. Daytime temperatures range around 3°C to 5°C (37-41°F). Due to the proximity to water, snow falls but rarely accumulates in large amounts for long. Southerly and easterly winds can occasionally bring piercing cold from the European continent.
