Climate Characteristics of Stockholm

General Overview

Stockholm is situated on the east coast of Sweden, where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. Due to the city's island structure, sea winds can significantly affect the "feels like" temperature, though the water prevents the mercury from dropping as low as it does further inland.

Precipitation Seasons (July-August and November)

Surprisingly, summer months are the wettest in Stockholm, with rain typically appearing as short, refreshing showers. In winter, precipitation turns to snow, though in recent years it has become less stable, often melting and refreezing, creating icy conditions in Gamla Stan.

The coldest month. Daytime temperatures are around -1°C (30°F) and drop to -5°C (23°F) at night. The city is usually partially snowy and harbors may freeze. Days are very short (approx. 6 hours of light).

February

Dry and cold winter. -1°C (30°F) daytime. Usually the month with the highest snow accumulation. Clear skies and sun reflecting off snow create a brilliant look, but the cold is steady.

March

Start of transition. 3°C (37°F) daytime. The sun begins to warm and days lengthen. Snow starts to melt in the streets, but the air remains very chilly with piercing Baltic winds.

April

Spring awakens. 9°C (48°F) daytime. Very volatile weather known as "April weather" (sun can turn to snow in minutes). Nature starts to turn green and first flowers appear.

May

Blooming month. 16°C (61°F) daytime. Clear skies and the city looks its best. Daylight lasts about 17 hours, humidity is low, and the air is fresh.

June

The month of White Nights. 20°C (68°F) daytime. The sun barely sets and the city is vibrant around Midsummer celebrations. Ideal for exploring the archipelago.

July

The warmest month. 23°C (73°F) daytime and 14°C (57°F) at night. Sunny and pleasant days. Peak time for swimming in lakes and urban beaches. Short summer showers are possible.

August

Continuation of pleasant summer. 22°C (72°F) daytime. Water is at its warmest. Daylight begins to shorten slowly, and nights become slightly more humid.

September

Golden autumn. 15°C (59°F) daytime. Clear skies return and the air becomes crisp. Foliage colors appear in Royal Djurgården, and the atmosphere becomes peaceful.

October

Cooling and winds. 10°C (50°F) daytime. Days shorten significantly and become greyer and rainier. Autumn storms from the sea are common.

November

The greyest month. 4°C (39°F) daytime. Very few sunshine hours. Cold rains and mists are routine as the city prepares for winter.
