Climate Characteristics of Tartu

General Overview

Tartu is located in southeastern Estonia, away from the direct moderating influence of the Baltic Sea. Consequently, the climate in Tartu is more continental than in Tallinn. This means summers in Tartu tend to be warmer and drier, while winters can be significantly colder. The Emajõgi River flows through the city, influencing local humidity and creating beautiful mists along the banks during the transition seasons.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

In summer, daytime temperatures average between 22°C and 25°C (72-77°F), and on warm days, they can exceed 28°C (82°F). In winter, the average daytime temperature is around -3°C (27°F), dropping to -15°C (5°F) or even -20°C (-4°F) on particularly cold nights. Due to the distance from the sea, day-to-night temperature variations are more noticeable here than in coastal cities.

Precipitation Seasons (June-August)

Summer is the wettest period in Tartu, with heavy showers and thunderstorms common after warm days. In winter, snow is very common and stays on the ground for long periods, giving the Old Town and the university a classic snowy "European academic city" look.

Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May and September)

May is a wonderful time when the city "wakes up" and students fill the parks. September offers relatively stable weather with crisp days and clear skies, and the foliage on Toomemägi Hill is considered among the most beautiful in Estonia.

The coldest month. Daytime temperatures are around -4°C (25°F) and drop to -10°C (14°F) at night. The city is usually covered in deep snow, and the river may freeze. It is a dry, stable cold that requires very warm clothing.

February

Deep, snowy winter. -3°C (27°F) daytime. Snow depth reaches its maximum. Days begin to lengthen, but the air remains frozen and very chilly due to eastern winds.
