Climate Characteristics of Trakai

General Overview

The climate in Trakai is dramatically influenced by the vast amounts of water surrounding the city. The lakes act as local temperature regulators: they slightly delay the warming of the air in spring but retain warmth in early autumn. Trakai is located near Vilnius (approx. 28 km), giving it a continental climate but with higher humidity and frequent mists over the water, providing the castle with a magical appearance in all seasons.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

In summer, daytime temperatures average between 22°C and 25°C (72-77°F). Proximity to the water creates a pleasant breeze. In winter, average daytime temperatures are around -3°C (27°F), dropping to -10°C (14°F) or lower at night. The lakes usually freeze completely, allowing for walking and ice fishing, but also making the air feel very cold and dry.

Precipitation Seasons (June-August)

Summer is the wettest period. Precipitation usually appears as powerful afternoon thunderstorms triggered by evaporation from the many lakes. In winter, snow is very common, creating one of Lithuania's most iconic winter landscapes.

January

The coldest month. -4°C (25°F) daytime and -11°C (12°F) at night. Lakes are completely frozen and snow-covered. The air is dry and freezing, and the view of the red castle in a white expanse is breathtaking.

February

Deep, stable winter. -3°C (27°F) daytime. Ice thickness reaches its peak. A popular time for ice fishing and skating, as eastern winds maintain intense, steady cold.

March

Start of gradual thawing. 3°C (37°F) daytime. More sunshine, but lake ice remains for a long time, cooling the air. A relatively bright month requiring warm clothing due to winds from the frozen water.

April

Spring awakens. 11°C (52°F) daytime. Snow disappears and lake ice begins to break all at once. Weather is volatile—warm days alternate with cold rains, but nature begins to turn green quickly.

May

The most pleasant month for visiting. 18°C (64°F) daytime. Clear skies and excellent visibility over the water. Temperatures are ideal for castle tours and hiking on the peninsula.

June

Start of summer. 22°C (72°F) daytime. Days are incredibly long and the town is busy. Lake waters begin to warm, making it a great time for boating and kayaking around the islands.

July

The warmest month. 24°C (75°F) daytime and 13°C (55°F) at night. Sunny and very warm days. Humidity rises slightly, and short summer showers or thunderstorms may cool the air in the afternoon.

August

Continuation of pleasant summer. 23°C (73°F) daytime. Water is at its warmest. Nights start to cool, and heavy morning mists over the lakes often give the castle a mysterious look.

September

Golden and clear autumn. 16°C (61°F) daytime. Deep blue skies return. Foliage on the islands reflects in the water, and the air is crisp and very fresh. Perfect time for photography.

October

Significant cooling to 9°C (48°F) daytime. Days shorten and become greyer and rainier. High humidity and stronger winds create a melancholic and unique autumn atmosphere along the water.

November

A dark and grey month. 3°C (37°F) daytime. Almost no sunshine hours. Cold rains and heavy fogs are common. Toward the end of the month, first snow often covers the wooden bridge to the castle.

December

Winter returns. -1°C (30°F) daytime and -6°C (21°F) at night. The town and castle are decorated for Christmas. Fresh snow and freezing lakes create a festive, magical atmosphere despite the cold.
