General Overview

Ushuaia features a subpolar oceanic climate. Due to its extreme southern latitude, the weather remains cool year-round, without a true warm summer. The city is famous for its extreme instability; locals often say you can experience "four seasons in one day".

Summer Season (December to February)

Summer in Ushuaia is cool and fresh. Daytime temperatures range between 12°C and 15°C (54-59°F), while nighttime lows drop to 5°C (41°F). This is the period with the most daylight (up to 18 hours!), allowing for long hikes and cruises. Despite being summer, strong winds and precipitation (rain or light snow) are common phenomena.

Winter Season (June to August)

Winter in Ushuaia is cold, dark, and snowy. Daytime temperatures range around 2°C to 4°C (36-39°F), while nighttime lows are usually below 0°C (32°F). Snow covers the city and surrounding mountains, creating excellent ski conditions. Daylight hours are very short (about 7 hours at winter solstice), and freezing Antarctic winds are strongly felt.

Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena

Autumn (March-May) offers the most spectacular colors as mountain trees turn bright red. Spring (September-November) is characterized by particularly strong winds and completely unpredictable weather. Throughout the year, the city is exposed to very strong westerly winds coming from the ocean.

Foliage at its peak. 9°C (48°F) daytime and nights around 2°C (36°F). First snow showers possible.

May

Cold and wet (6°C/43°F daytime). Days shorten significantly, and the atmosphere turns wintry.

June

Start of winter. 4°C (39°F) daytime and -1°C (30°F) at night. Minimal daylight hours; snow is common.

July

The coldest month. 3°C (37°F) daytime and -2°C (28°F) at night. Peak ski and winter tourism season.

August

Still cold and snowy (4°C/39°F daytime). Ski conditions are usually excellent, and days begin to lengthen.

September

Start of spring. 7°C (45°F) daytime. Characterized by very strong winds and extreme weather shifts.

October

Gradual warming (10°C/50°F daytime). First blooms, but sudden snow is still possible.
