Climate Characteristics of Ventspils

General Overview

Ventspils is located on the northwestern coast of Latvia, where the Venta River meets the Baltic Sea. Its climate is the most maritime in the country. The sea dramatically influences the weather: it moderates the winter cold and prevents extreme summer heat. Ventspils is known as one of the sunniest cities in Latvia, yet it is also one of the windiest, with sea breezes blowing almost constantly.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

In summer, temperatures are very pleasant, averaging 19°C to 22°C (66-72°F). Nights are cool and fresh. In winter, temperatures are usually around or slightly above freezing (1°C to 2°C / 34-36°F), making it one of the warmest Latvian cities during this season. However, the strong "Ventspils wind" means that even at 2°C, it can feel freezing physically.

Precipitation Seasons (September-December)

Peak rainfall occurs in late autumn. Due to sea moisture, the city often experiences heavy fogs, giving it a mysterious look. Snow is common but, due to the salt air and proximity to water, it tends to melt faster than inland.

Weather in Ventspils by Month

January A relatively mild maritime winter for Latvia. 1°C (34°F) daytime and -3°C (27°F) at night. Sea winds are very strong, often bringing a mix of snow and rain. The Baltic Sea usually doesn't freeze completely here due to currents, keeping temperatures stable.

 

February The coldest month, yet less extreme than the east. 0°C (32°F) daytime and -4°C (25°F) at night. The air is very humid, and the moisture combined with the wind creates a bone-chilling cold. Clear days are relatively rare.

 

March Spring is slow to arrive due to the cold sea waters. 4°C (39°F) daytime. Cold northern winds still blow, but days lengthen significantly and ice in the Venta River begins to break and flow into the sea.

 

April A relatively dry and clear month. 9°C (48°F) daytime. The skies clear of heavy winter clouds. The sun starts to warm, but the sea breeze remains very chilly. Excellent time for walks along the city's famous promenade.

 

May Spring at its peak. 15°C (59°F) daytime. The city is filled with flowers (Ventspils is famous for its floral displays). Temperatures are very comfortable for walking, and humidity drops to its annual minimum.

 

June Start of summer and "White Nights." 19°C (66°F) daytime. The sun shines for nearly 18 hours a day. The sea is still too cold for swimming (around 14°C/57°F), but the beaches begin to fill with visitors.

 

July The warmest and sunniest month. 22°C (72°F) daytime and 14°C (57°F) at night. Perfect weather for a vacation at the Blue Flag beach. The water warms slightly but remains very refreshing. Short, refreshing afternoon showers may occur.

 

August Continuation of pleasant summer. 21°C (70°F) daytime. The sea is at its warmest (up to 19°C/66°F). Precipitation starts to increase toward the end of the month, and nights become humid and pleasant for harbor walks.

 

September Start of the maritime autumn. 17°C (63°F) daytime. Winds begin to strengthen again. This is a volatile month—golden sunny days can quickly turn into short rainstorms coming off the Baltic.

 

October Windy and stormy month. 11°C (52°F) daytime. Autumn colors blend with the rough sea. Waves in the Baltic reach their peak; a great time for nature lovers to see the power of the sea.

 

November Dark, wet, and grey. 6°C (43°F) daytime. Very few hours of sunshine. Light but prolonged rains and heavy sea fogs are common. The wind blows steadily, cooling the city.

 

December Start of winter. 2°C (36°F) daytime and -1°C (30°F) at night. First snow begins to fall, but often turns into freezing rain. The city is decorated with Christmas

lights, softening the grey and chilly atmosphere.
