Climate Characteristics of Viljandi

General Overview

Viljandi is located in southern Estonia in a hilly region known for its green and rural landscapes. Its climate is temperate-continental, influenced by its distance from the sea and the local topography of the lake valley. The surrounding hills and forests often "trap" moisture, creating a very pleasant micro-climate in summer but snowy and quite cold conditions in winter. In summer, daytime temperatures average between 21°C and 24°C (70-75°F), and the air around the lake feels fresh and pleasant. In winter, the average daytime temperature is around -2°C (28°F), dropping to -10°C (14°F) or lower at night. Due to its southern location, winter here is more stable than in Tallinn, with fewer thaw days and snow staying on the ground longer.

Precipitation Seasons (June-August)

Peak rainfall occurs during the summer months, usually as short tropical-like afternoon showers. The rain keeps the region very green year-round. In winter, snow piles up to a good height and covers the castle ruins and hills, making the area a popular spot for cross-country skiing and snowy nature walks.

May is the month of bloom, where the trees and bushes around the lake fill with fresh green. September offers relatively stable weather with crisp days and clear skies. It is an ideal time to photograph the golden autumn foliage reflecting in the lake's quiet waters.

Deep, snowy winter. -2°C (28°F) daytime. Snow depth reaches its maximum this month. Days lengthen slowly, but continental winds keep temperatures freezing.

The warmest month. 23°C (73°F) daytime and 13°C (55°F) at night. Very warm and pleasant days. This is the peak time for the city's famous folk festival, usually held under clear summer skies.

Continuation of refreshing summer. 22°C (72°F) daytime. Nights start to cool slightly more toward 12°C (54°F). Rainfall begins to increase, and morning air over the lake becomes misty and picturesque.

September

Golden and clear autumn. 16°C (61°F) daytime. Skies return to deep blue. Temperatures drop but the air is very pleasant for hiking. Autumn colors appear in the forests around the lake in full glory.

October

Significant cooling to 9°C (48°F) daytime. Days shorten significantly and become greyer and rainier. Winds strengthen and the city takes on a wintry, melancholic, and magical look.

November

A dark and chilly month. 3°C (37°F) daytime. Skies are covered in heavy clouds most of the time. Chance of first snow mixed with rain, and the air feels wet and very cold due to high humidity.

December
