Climate Characteristics of Viljandi

General Overview

Viljandi is located in southern Estonia in a hilly region known for its green and rural landscapes. Its climate is temperate-continental, influenced by its distance from the sea and the local topography of the lake valley. The surrounding hills and forests often "trap" moisture, creating a very pleasant micro-climate in summer but snowy and quite cold conditions in winter. Due to its southern location, winter here is more stable than in Tallinn, with fewer thaw days and snow staying on the ground longer.

Precipitation Seasons (June-August)

Peak rainfall occurs during the summer months, usually as short tropical-like afternoon showers. The rain keeps the region very green year-round. In winter, snow piles up to a good height and covers the castle ruins and hills, making the area a popular spot for cross-country skiing and snowy nature walks.

The warmest month. 23°C (73°F) daytime and 13°C (55°F) at night. Very warm and pleasant days. This is the peak time for the city's famous folk festival, usually held under clear summer skies.

Continuation of refreshing summer. 22°C (72°F) daytime. Nights start to cool slightly more toward 12°C (54°F). Rainfall begins to increase, and morning air over the lake becomes misty and picturesque.

September

Golden and clear autumn. 16°C (61°F) daytime. Skies return to deep blue. Temperatures drop but the air is very pleasant for hiking. Autumn colors appear in the forests around the lake in full glory.

October

Significant cooling to 9°C (48°F) daytime. Days shorten significantly and become greyer and rainier. Winds strengthen and the city takes on a wintry, melancholic, and magical look.

November

A dark and chilly month. 3°C (37°F) daytime. Skies are covered in heavy clouds most of the time. Chance of first snow mixed with rain, and the air feels wet and very cold due to high humidity.

December
