Climate Characteristics of Villa de Leyva

General Overview

Villa de Leyva is located at an altitude of approximately 2,150 meters (7,050 feet), but unlike nearby Bogotá, it sits in a micro-climate characterized by a dry, semi-arid environment. The town is surrounded by mountains that block much of the cloud cover, granting it significantly more sunny days and crisp, dry air. It is a favorite getaway for those seeking to escape the humidity or the cold of the higher mountains.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

Daytime temperatures consistently average between 20°C and 23°C (68-73°F), while nighttime lows drop to 9°C-11°C (48-52°F). Due to the dryness and clear skies, there are sharp differences between day and night: the midday sun is very strong and the air feels warm, but as soon as the sun sets, temperatures drop and it becomes quite chilly.

Rainy Seasons (April-May and October-November)

Villa de Leyva also has two rainy seasons, but the total rainfall is much lower than in Bogotá or Medellín. Rain usually appears as short, fast-moving showers, and the skies tend to clear up shortly after. During these periods, the surrounding desert landscape becomes a bit greener.
