Climate Characteristics of Vilnius

Vilnius is located in southeastern Lithuania, at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers. Due to its inland position and distance from the Baltic Sea (approx. 300 km), its climate is distinctly continental. Summer is the wettest period in Vilnius. Rain typically appears as strong thunderstorms breaking out after a hot day, clearing the air and leaving the city fresh. In winter, precipitation turns into stable snow that remains on the ground for long periods, highlighting the architectural beauty of the Old Town.

May is the month of awakening, with the city's gardens and parks blooming at their peak. September offers relatively stable weather with crisp days and deep blue skies. This is an ideal time for walking tours in the city's picturesque alleys and up Gediminas Hill overlooking the city.

February

Cold continental winter. -2°C (28°F) daytime. Snow accumulates to a great depth and the air remains frozen due to eastern influences. Mostly grey days, but the cold is more stable than in coastal cities.

March

The start of slow thawing. 4°C (39°F) daytime. The sun appears more, but nights remain frozen. Snow starts to disappear from main streets and the air begins to feel spring-like in the afternoons.

April

Spring arrives rapidly. 12°C (54°F) daytime. Snow disappears completely and the city begins to fill with its first green. Weather is volatile—warm days can quickly turn into cold rain or late snow flurries.

May

The most pleasant month for visiting. 18°C (64°F) daytime. Skies are clear and blooming is at its peak. Humidity is low and the air is very fresh, creating ideal conditions for outdoor cafes.

June

Start of summer. 22°C (72°F) daytime. Days are very long and the city is vibrant. This is a warm month where occasional summer showers and short thunderstorms begin to appear.

July

The warmest month. 25°C (77°F) daytime and 14°C (57°F) at night. Temperatures can be quite high and humidity rises. A relatively rainy month, but rain usually passes quickly followed by strong sun.

August

Continuation of warm summer. 24°C (75°F) daytime. Nights start to cool slightly but days remain summery and pleasant. Toward the end of the month, rainfall increases and the air becomes more humid.

September

Golden and clear autumn. 17°C (63°F) daytime. Skies are blue and the air becomes crisp and refreshing. Autumn colors appear in the forests surrounding the city, and visibility from the hills is excellent.

October

Significant cooling to 10°C (50°F) daytime. Days shorten and become greyer and rainier. A windy month characterized by leaf fall and a classic autumn atmosphere.

November

A dark and grey month. 4°C (39°F) daytime. Almost no sunshine hours. Cold rains and fogs are common. Chance of first snow toward the end of the month, and the air feels wet and cold.

December

Winter returns. -1°C (30°F) daytime and -5°C (23°F) at night. The Christmas market in Cathedral Square opens, and the city is filled with festive lights reflecting in the fresh snow.
