Climate Characteristics of Vilnius

General Overview

Vilnius is located in southeastern Lithuania, at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers. Due to its inland position and distance from the Baltic Sea (approx. 300 km), its climate is distinctly continental. The city is surrounded by forested hills that provide some protection from strong winds but also contribute to higher summer humidity and stable winter cold. Vilnius is known for its lush green summers and fairytale-like winters when the Old Town is blanketed in snow.

Temperatures and Daily Variations

In summer (July-August), daytime temperatures range between 22°C and 26°C (72-79°F), and on hot continental days, they can climb above 30°C (86°F). In winter, the average daytime temperature is around -2°C (28°F), dropping to -10°C (14°F) or even -20°C (-4°F) on cold nights. Day-to-night temperature variations are significant, especially in spring and autumn.

Precipitation Seasons (June-August)

Summer is the wettest period in Vilnius. Rain typically appears as strong thunderstorms breaking out after a hot day, clearing the air and leaving the city fresh. In winter, precipitation turns into stable snow that remains on the ground for long periods, highlighting the architectural beauty of the Old Town.

Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May and September)

May is the month of awakening, with the city's gardens and parks blooming at their peak. September offers relatively stable weather with crisp days and deep blue skies. This is an ideal time for walking tours in the city's picturesque alleys and up Gediminas Hill overlooking the city.
