Climate Characteristics of Visby

Island of Sun and Moderation

Due to its location in the middle of the Baltic Sea, Visby is strongly influenced by the water, which acts as a thermal buffer. It is consistently one of the sunniest places in Sweden. The sea absorbs heat during summer and releases it slowly in autumn and winter, making Visby much milder than the mainland.

Mild and Windy Winter

Winter in Visby is among Sweden's mildest, with daytime temperatures usually staying between 1°C and 2°C (34-36°F). Snow falls but often mixes with rain. The main challenge is the Baltic wind and high humidity, which can make it feel much colder than the actual temperature.

Long and Pleasant Summer

Summer in Visby is arguably the best in Sweden. Temperatures stabilize around 20-23°C (68-73°F). Famous for its roses, the blooming season lasts long into autumn thanks to the stored sea heat. The air is exceptionally clean and the island light is famously clear and bright.
